Grand Canyon Overflight Issues

From: Stacy Howard <[email protected]>

For those of you who can attend, there is a public meeting concerning the Grand Canyon SFRA 5:30 to 7:30 tomorrow night. April 6, at the Embassy Suites, 2630 E Camelback Rd in Phoenix.

The preferred alternative raises the floor of the entire SFRA to 10,500 (most areas are currently as low as 8,000) and the Flight Free Zones to 18,000 msl. There has been no justification provided for these increased altitudes, and in fact, the majority of aircraft noise 24/7 at the canyon is attributed to high flying jets.

I expect a large turnout from those who would prefer to restrict aircraft flights even further and there are alternatives still on the table that would eliminate some of our existing VFR corridors. It is important we have a good turnout from the flying community.

If you are unable to attend the meeting, I urge you to visit the website for the EIS, and send your written comments. Attached is the official announcement of the meetings containing a link to the park web page where you will find access to the Grand Canyon study.

Thanks,

Stacy

Hafast,

Thanks for the heads up ... can't be there with you.

I understand that AZ Pilots Association (Nancy Benscoter, President, at [email protected], and your regional RAF rep, Mark Spencer [[email protected]], and AOPA are all working this issue. They can certainly marshall some lobbying resources, both with the Park Service and with your Arizona Congressional delegation.

Good luck on fighting this proposal - it's in all our interests as pilots that these things don't happen without our organized, active, and "loud" (pun intended) participation.
