Did you fly somewhere cool, take photos, and feel like telling the tale to make us drool from the confines of our offices? Post them up!

Re: Grassstrippilot & Family: North to Alaska!

Day 12: Fun day! Started the day off by running over to Soldatna to retrieve our planes and bring them back to the strip. Then a very scenic flight over to Seward for our 6 hour boat cruise in the Kenai Fjords. Hump back whales, orcas, sea lions, puffins, sea otters, glaciers calving...and more. Windy when we got back so we had to leave the planes at Soldatna again.

Grassstrippilot & Family: North to Alaska!

Day 13: Yesterday was nothing short of an amazing day. Heli rides for everyone and a special ride for Dee and Adam to the top of a glacier with a good friend of mine from college. Her and her fiancé run a bear/glacier viewing heli business and needed to reposition a few helis and then go check out some landing zones on a glacier. Months ago Kirsten said this might be a possibility and it was #1 on Dee's wishlist. We flew photo ship to get some pics and flew the same glaciers I flew over on my first plane ride as a passenger in AK 20 years ago. So cool!

Another beautiful day on our way to Homer.

Dee and Adam spent the better part of an hour on the glacier. I was so envious!

Alaska Ultimate Safaris. They are friends with TangoFox and operate right next door. Finally got to meet him too!

Speaking of meeting BCPers, we had two guys see us, recognize us and come say high...which was really cool.

Also, I have to tell you what a generous host Barnstormer has been. Besides feeding us the first night and letting us camp on his strip, he's opened his home to us, given us his truck to use, and shuttled us back and forth to the Soldotna airport when we weren't able to get into his strip due to winds. A real class act and we are so grateful for his help and generosity.

Grassstrippilot & Family: North to Alaska!

Day 14: Another item checked off the box: we flew into Lakehood. Lots of cool airplanes. I've been there a few times but obviously never flown in. It went well except for a little confusion on the departure. But the controllers were nice and helpful. We walked around the lake a bit, watched planes come and go, looked for geo caches and then back to camp for a BBQ with our hosts. While we were eating, we had a nice surprise when Troy Hamon stopped by for a burger with his wife and daughter. So cool to be able to meet up. We had been texting a bit and hoped it would work out. Phil grilled some killer burgers for us!

Re: Grassstrippilot & Family: North to Alaska!

If you just move here that saves the fuel bill on the flight home.

I always like seeing people enjoying Alaska! If you need anything in Valdez please look me up. There is fuel here now. You want to work your way up in the scenery, Seward, then Homer then Valdez...Just a little Alaska rivalry there.
Enjoy your trip!

Re: Grassstrippilot & Family: North to Alaska!

Day 15: A little slower paced day but still awesome. We broke camp and repositioned to Homer to stay with a friend (the same one with the Helis). No tent for a few days!

On the way to Homer, I noticed my left gauge shower a lot lower than it should have. Sunday afternoon we refueled in Soldotna when we got back. Well, the airport ran out of fuel later that afternoon and, with our plane being parked closest to the fuel island, I guess it became the defacto source of fuel. I figure 15-20 gallons out of one tank. I hope it was someone in a serious jam that needed it, in which case I'd be ok with it...if they would have left a note or something! Anyway...

Allen and Stan did a quick oil change and met us down there. We had a quick picnic on the spit, got settled into our new accommodations, and then spent the afternoon in a beautiful little town across from the bay called Seldovia. We walked to the beach, had ice cream, climbed on rocks and looked for geocaches. It was a great place to kill an afternoon!

Picnic on the spit.
Image

The flight to Seldovia is only about 15 minutes, but apparently Adam was beat!
Image

The dandelions are on steroids over here. Some 2'+ tall!
Image

A cool little village.
Image
Image

Lots of cool wood carvings all over town.
Image
Image

Ice cream stop.
Image

We looked for geocaches along the way. There was this cool one in the library. It was closed but they let us in anyway to find it.
Image

We hiked the Otterbahn trail down to a beach. It reminded us more of Oregon than AK.
Image
Image
Image

The beach was cool. Lots of interesting rocks and barnacles. The kids really enjoyed running around and climbing the rocks.
Image

Seldovia strip. Beautiful approach into it.
Image

Another geocache with a cool container made to look like a rusted bolt.
Image

Our new accommodations for a few nights. Some rain was coming so we thought it would be good to get out of the tent for a few nights.
Image

Dinner in the motor home.
Image
Image
Image

Our new host has some cool walrus tusks she has personally harvested off of dead walruses over the years.

Re: Grassstrippilot & Family: North to Alaska!

Soldotna was out fuel when we dropped in there Sunday night, so we hopped over to Kenai. We did wave at your planes as we taxied by. My family thought it was pretty funny that I know your planes without ever having seen them...

Re: Grassstrippilot & Family: North to Alaska!

That's awesome! I was wondering if you were able to get fuel. I was hoping it was you so I knew the person that I helped out. Of course I know you would have texted me!

Re: Grassstrippilot & Family: North to Alaska!

Wasn't me. I might buy fuel from whoever has it, but I won't steal from anybody...sort of boggles my mind that people will do that.
