Re: Gravelly Valley

Bumping the thread. Joey (AvidFlyer) and I are going camping at Gravelly Valley on Oct 1. Any one else want to join us? We're bringing our boys along. A buddy of mine is also flying in in his RV-8.

I'm going to be flying back from Washington right about then. Might stop by and say hi at least.

Cool. We're staying one night, Oct 1. Probably head out for breakfast on Sunday, not sure. Maybe Willows? Playing it by ear at this point.

How old are the boys? I might fly in in the Bonanza with my almost four year old girl.

Re: Gravelly Valley

I am not 100% sure how RV friendly that strip is Scott it's pretty rough. Let's plan on Willows for breakfast there's some nice mountains to fly through on the way there.

Re: Gravelly Valley

I agree with Joey's comment, the strip is a little rough. There are all sorts of donuts out in the middle of the strip from trucks and atvs that make it even worse. Landing on the road adjacent to the strip would probably be a lot smoother.

Re: Gravelly Valley

Maybe I won't bring the Bonanza then. How bad is it? How far down the strip is the damage and how deep are the ruts? Are they in the middle (width wise?)? Span the width?

Thanks,
Phil

That is MY island...There are many like it, but that one is mine...

I need to check out Gravelly. Trying to figure out where it is now on airnav.

We also need another fly-in up here in October!

The ruts aren't very deep at all, but the ground is very hard so you feel all of them. The whole strip is pretty much covered with them so there is no way to avoid them. It's not super rough, just rougher than I expected. That was with 8.00x6 tires. You would probably be ok with the Bonanza, I know piperpainter has landed there with his Mooney. Maybe he can tell you what he thought?

Re: Gravelly Valley

4-wheeler and truck ruts? being told by some manager u cant camp there....?! guess us idaho clucks are just damn lucky that we are here and not there! i'm sure that u guys have some fun stuff there also, but there really are some damn cool strips here that u need to ck out and enjoy...i've camped all over the frank and other places here, and have been totally spoiled...even the private ones in the wilderness seem to always welcome us, and they may charge something to camp there, but are always glad to see us...or, if you're a cold camping wimp like me, u can always rent a cabin if it's available...! nothin' quite like a central idaho morning with hot coffee and a hot breakfast.....and all day to fly, fish, nap and etc...

Re: Gravelly Valley

Gravelly is no problem for Bonanza, all Cessna's, trigear Maules.
I've seen lots of different aircraft there including low wing Pipers etc.
It is looong with slight down slope towards the lake.
Depending on wind you can land either direction.
There is/was even a cross strip but may find obstacles.
North end is a shooting gallery so the rocks won't attack, they've all been killed a hundred times.

Re: Gravelly Valley

One more bump on this thread. I'm planning on arriving on Saturday late afternoon. Sunday morning Bfast run to Willows and then cruising down to Rio Vista (O88) for their Annual wings and wheels event. It's local for me and I know a bunch of folks hangared there. Stop in if your in the area.

Re: Gravelly Valley

Here's a recent vid. You can clearly see the brodie marks. There's a cross road that runs across the runway. When I was there last year landing to the North of that road where the guy in the vid touches down was smoother.
