I landed at a strip called "Van Sant" the other day. It's a grass strip used mostly for gliders but airplanes (especially taildraggers) are welcome also.
It sits on a plateau above the delaware river in pennsylvania, when you approach from the east you actually are below the majority of the runway when you cross the threshold and the rollout is definitely uphill. Coolest part is what they got in their hangers. Two stearman, stock cub, super cub on tundra tires, a tiger moth and a chipmunk, all for rent. definitely gonna go back and try and get a checkout in the stearman!

Don't recommend the rest of you t/w newbies in my area try it w/out an experienced pilot w/you.

Yeah, its a neat place Iamb trying to get back there before the leaves drop and i'll try to get some pics. They have a web site i'll have to track down the address.

Although Dusty was prob too busy jockeying the throttle and flaps to snap a photo. Seems like I always remember the camera on final, and the thing is stowed in the back.

Sorry Dusty, it's the classic "This thread is useless without pics" line. Wup is working his way to the top of the heap of shit-givers around here.

Get your lady or a buddy in that right seat and have them take some photos. I think it eases my GF's anxiety to have her take some shots when we're flying, but there have been a few times where she spends about 20-30 minutes behind the camera, and then all of a sudden says "I don't feel so good."

Just looked at the link above, that place looks awesome.

The planes flying great went through a pretty extensive annual and replaced alot of bushings and springs and stuff like that. Really made a big difference. That continental is unbelievably smooth compared to the lycs. in the 172s i had gotten used to. Sometimes I wish I had those B model Flaps though.

Hey I'm not worried about it. I'm just jealous where we fly here around the D.C. area the wildest thing we see to photograph is a homeless man in need of a haircut . (Unless we bust the D.C. FRZ then neat stuff starts happening!)You guys run into some pretty cool strips out there, but I bet you wouldn't belive how well your 170 will climb on a cold day around here Zane.

Van Sant is a very cool place and there are actually a lot more Stearman there than what they have in the main hangar. Very active on the weekends when everyone is out playing.

Another great field just a little further north is Andover-Aeroflex. Beautiful location and a great tailwheel school on the field. They instruct in Stearman as well, but even a hour in the supercub with Damian is well worth it. Landing on the runway there (grass and asphalt parallel) is the next best thing to landing on the boat (relatively short runway with lakes on both ends) www.bushflying.com

To the south you should also check out Campbell Field, on the eastern shore of Va. Beautiful little grass field owned by Gordon Campbell - he hosts a small fly-in almost every weekend that the weather supports. He is enthusiastic about everyone that flys in but he seems to really enjoy the old taildraggers. He is planning his larger fall fly-in for Oct 21-22.
