Great Salt Lake Area Flying 11/26/13

Between work, training, weather, and being sick, it had been 30 days since I had flown. So today, before continuing the work with the removal of the old Narco, it was time to go out and play a little. What a spectacular day for it, albeit a little hazy. We flew up to check out the conditions at Black Mountain. It's still a little rough, but better than it was earlier in the year. Then we flew by Spiral Jetty. It still has some pretty big ruts so we didn't land. The shrimpers are still working over at Promontory and I didn't want to wake them, so that one will have to wait (never landed there). Then we headed over to Freemont Island. I had always wanted to land there but wasn't sure about it. Wish I had a long time ago! Both strips are in great shape and were no problem. We had a ton of fun! Here are some pics. I tried out a new mount for the camera too. If I got some good video, I'll post them later today. We ended the day with a landing back at Ogden on the dirt strip, which meant the only asphalt we used was to taxi and takeoff. A beautiful thing!

Look like a good time! I think you have the perfect family plane. I get envious every time I see a picture of it.

There is just something about a plane sitting in the middle of nowhere that appeals to me. I think this forum and its members is a good fit for me.

Hey, Grassstrip,
Glad to see the pics. They are great! I missed you, as I went flying, too, but I went the other way. Departed Ogden (KOGD), went to Morgan (42U), then Evanston, WY (KEVW), then played in the mountains between Evanston, Lost Creek, Huntsville and Morgan on the way back looking for landing spots for summer camping trips. There is a pipeline running from Evanston toward Morgan I kept looking at last summer thinking it was a good place to land. With just a skiff of snow on it yesterday I could see many burms accross it for erosion control that I could not see last summer. NOT a good place to land. I flew over Gilder Peak and did a T&G. The strip looks good. All the "start up" sagebrush on both strips has been removed and it looks like "someone cares". Guilder Peak is very doable now but I haven't been able to contact Clint yet for permission to land.

Very cool, I've always wanted to land the strips on Fremont Island.

While you were on Freemont Island, did you fine Kit Carson's signature. You probably saw it but if you did not, I can tell you where it is.
The history of Freemont island is interesting.

Flyer, I forgot all about that. We didn't venture far fromt the strip. PM me it's location if you would. A friend of mine knows the owners. Before I go trapsing all over, I want to try to get permission first.

Thanks Whee! We are loving it!

Steve, so good to meet you today! I would love to check out Guilder! Let me know what you find out regarding permission.

Here is a video of our flight yesterday. It was so much fun i went again today and took Sadie and Tyler along with another friend.

Re: Great Salt Lake Area Flying 11/26/13

Kit Carson signed his name on the north side of that arched rock on the top of the island. You can see the arched rock when you fly over it.
His signature is a cross. That is how he signed his name since he could not write. The cross stands for Chris or Kit as he was called. Look it up in the history books. I had to move some weeds away in order to see it. He was on one of Freemont's expeditions.

Very interesting.

I read the history on the island today. Very interesting. I'm hoping to get permission to do some hiking over there and explore it a bit.

Re: Great Salt Lake Area Flying 11/26/13

nice pics corey...! that 205 is a cool ride, my buddy in challis had one, and they are very capable birds....looks like my daughters health issues are getting somewhat under control, so i am hoping for a lot more b/c flying this upcoming season...! aside from doing a 2-day bfr in the frank, i didnt get much b/c done last summer...lots of flying, but simply transportation runs...today i am way thankful for a solid older 182T as it held up really well for all those trips...!see ya soon...!

Corey, I just couldn't stand it anymore, so I headed out to the Freemont today. I've landed on the lower strip before but never tried the upper strip, so today was the day. The proof:
