Re: Guess who has two thumbs and.....

Nice airplane, Great find. 180-185 best airplane ever built, you will have great fun.

Not trying to ruin your great find but. For what it is worth those are late model two piece McCauley wheels and brakes. You can tell by the "spoked" wheels and brake calipers which are flat on the back (inboard) side rather than the two bumps on Clevelands. I just thought this might help if you ever need to order parts because even the linings are not the same.

Tim

ps: the FAA record CD is $10 now. Still well worth it.

Re: Guess who has two thumbs and.....

That is very helpful. We were thinking it had a mix of Cleveland and McCauley. I know you can't get McCauley stuff any more, right? There's no stc for the wheels and braise - they aren't original right?

I haven't really stretched her legs yet. She's going in the shop for some short term attention and we will soon know how she goes.

GravityKnight wrote:Nice looking bird! How's she perform up here in this thin air we live in? Your a little lower than me, but what 54-5500? I hear boulder traffic a lot as my home base has the same freq

Yeah cubscout we might be neighbors. I'm probably going to take over the hangar the plane is in. Heat, water, and power is first world!

cubscout wrote:Yo Soy! Congratulations! I always liked that particular paint scheme--classic but non-factory, and great colours, of course.... And lotsa cool mods. Way ta' go!

Thanks. cubscout

Re: Guess who has two thumbs and.....

The originals were Goodyear. The disc floated in the wheel and the caliper was fixed unlike the Clevelands and McCauleys. The disc were held in by little clip that sometimes would come out letting the disc jam in the wheel, locking up the brake. Plus they were not very effective.

The McCauley two piece wheels and brakes were used on later model 180/185, serial number 180's (18052925 through 18053203) and 185's (18503505 and on). I think they are found fairly commonly field approved on earlier model 180's. I may be able to track down a 337 for you. I would need a little time as I have to check with a friend of mine. Let me know if you need me to check. I think disc, linings, bearings etc. are available from PMA sources, Wheel halves and calipers were used on other model Cessna's (206 and 210) and are available from the usual used part sources including Ebay. The disc and calipers are the same part numbers for both the three piece and two piece McCauley wheels. I just gave a set of calipers I had laying around to a friend of mine for his 76 185. I wouldn't be in a hurry to change out a set of two piece wheels as they are on the Kenmore 8.50x6 tire STC as well as Cleveland's. I'm sure Tony (Aeropod) can help you sort it out.

Congrats Gary! Quite a find and I'm sure you are a proud owner. Hope you can get to Llano and show her off. Might be easier to get your camping gear in this one. Take care and enjoy!

Congrats Greg, now you can haul some toys to the back country. Enjoy the learning curve that comes with a new bird. Fly it a lot and our paths will cross again.

Thanks, Gary. I sure will.

It's getting confusing round here with all the Garys and Gregs.

Re: Guess who has two thumbs and.....

Greg, is it green or blue, kinda hard to tell in the pic? Either way love the color.

Man, all the BCP'ers gettin/already flyin wagons is exciting. A long wing Maule would have been awesome too, but no doubt a wagon is a helluva ship. Super pumped for ya and hope you can bring it down to Llano in April!!! If you can divert to Big Bend on either part of your trip I'll show ya the "best" part of Texas haha [emoji12]
