Heads up for alcohol free gas

Just did some testing on a single hose multi grade fuel pump it takes just about a half gallon of gas to clear the pump out to where you can get ethanol free for your airplane lawnmower etc. just tested that today just passing on the info , in case anyone runs into that scenario and is curious.

Re: Heads up for alcohol free gas

1/2 gallon of E10 plus 4 1/2 gallons E0 equals 5 gallons of E1. Not a big deal unless you are only getting 1/2 gallon of gas.

And I have an early 1990's Lawnboy that has run nothing but E10 mixed with oil for at least 15 years---still happily mowing the yard. :D

And I have a 2005 Honda walk behind that was in the shop 4 times with a screwed up carburetor until I went to alcohol free

Re: Heads up for alcohol free gas

And my 2013 JD Ztrac says ethanol free in the manual. Had enough problems with E10 in small motors on augers and pumps to try using it in my lawn mower.

Do you really think 1 % will hurt anything. If so, put he first gallon in your car. If you are driving a diesel rig then put it in the first car that shows up.

Re: Heads up for alcohol free gas

I don't think 1% will hurt anything. But after 10 tank fulls how many percent is there? Only way to know for sure is to check. At what % point is it too much? For a lawn mower it may not be a big deal, but as for my plane, I'm making sure it stays 0%...

Re: Heads up for alcohol free gas

David, I have to wonder if you missed the M in front of ethanol. I have a friend that has a couple of years old Bad Boy 20 hp Kawasaki zero turn mower made in Arkansas and It allows E10. He doesn't even worry about letting a half a tank sit through the winter here in Iowa. Runs great except he's had a flat tire or two. :D Wonder what's different about Canadian JD's if you're reading the manual right.

Manufacturers that allow use of E10 fuel includes:

Agco (500 Series Lawn Tractor) - Billy Goat (Quiet Blow Blower) - Echo (Grass Trimmer, Power Blower, Tiller/Cultivator) - Homelite (Ranger Chain Saw, Yard Broom) - Honda (Rotary Lawn Mower) - Husqvarna (Ranger 55 Chain Saw) - John Deere (Rotary Lawn Mower, Snowblowers) - Lawn Boy (GoldPro Series Lawn Mower) - Manties (Tiller Model) - Massey Ferguson (Lawn Tractor) - Simplicity (Lawn Tractor) - Snapper (Riding Mowers) - Toro (Lawn Mower) - Troy Bilt (Tillers) - Kohler - Tecumseh Products Company.

Re: Heads up for alcohol free gas

Our local Mogas went away bout a year ago. Now I'm back to all the same issues that went away when we had E-free gas for 4 years.

Ethanol tainted unleaded does not store worth crap. I know u love it Marty but it gives us a lot of problems out in the boonies where its way more convenient to store larger quantities of fuel.

Only solution now is to haul it in every couple weeks and use it up in that time, if not I have to blend avgas with it to get our equipment to run right. Communist mandated bullcrap IMO

Re: Heads up for alcohol free gas

I went and reread my manual. You are correct that it allows use of up to 10% ethanol. But when we have as much problems with E10 all our small engines as we do, it's not worth trying in the mower.
Besides, what is the benefit of E10 over E0?

Re: Heads up for alcohol free gas

I just typed out a long speel and Tim blocked with his post so will shorten this one---Ha Ha. When I made homemade biodiesel, I needed pure methanol that had to be "dry". I got it in 55 gallon barrels and would fill a 5 gallon plastic jug when I needed some. I made sure the big bung was tight and the quarter turn plastic spigot was closed and I could keep it for months, maybe a year, with no problem. You have to ask yourself, is air coming and going where the fuel is. If it is, correct it. Like on the 180, seal up the vent under the wing and make sure you remember to unseal it before you fly. Put a piece of tape over the vent on the lawn mower gas tank---it's not very hard to do.

Re: Heads up for alcohol free gas

Tim this is for you, :D
Current Four Years of Research by The Urban Air Initiative Regarding Aromatics  Small nano-sized particles emitted from gas tailpipes are a predominant source of most dangerous toxic carcinogens responsible for premature deaths  The ultra fine particles lodge in the lungs and from there enter the blood stream

Unless regulators improve gasoline quality by reducing aromatic precursors, advanced engine technologies such as direct injection and lean-burn combustion, etc. are likely to increase emissions of particle-borne toxics, especially those carried by the more lethal nano-particles. • A recent study by DOE’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory

“All three metrics indicate a statistically significant reduction in particulate emissions with E32 and E45 fuels compared to base gasoline…The decrease from E0 to these fuels is on average ~30% by particle number and ~45% by mass.” (p. 4) • “Overall, the effects of ethanol blends on GDI vehicle PM emissions described above agree with previous work.”

Re: Heads up for alcohol free gas

Marty I am sure that would probably work trouble is every gas tank I ever ran a cross is vented in some fashion that is where the problem lies moisture in the air moisture in the gas corrosion. Alcohol draws moisture making things rotten

Hey you don't have to preach to me Tim. I think it's BS too. Same a dpf and Def fluid in diesels. Burn a lot more fuel to have cleaner exhaust. Burning more means refining and extracting more. So can anyone please explain how it's really cleaner over all?

Re: Heads up for alcohol free gas

and the new commercial engines that burn DEF only cost us another $20,000 for the privilege of dealing with the crap.
