Help Needed: DC Area PA-12 Pre-Buy Inspection

Looking to hire someone knowledgeable to do a pre-buy inspection on a PA-12 in the DC area.

Any thoughts or assistance the group could provide is much appreciated.

Re: Help Needed: DC Area PA-12 Pre-Buy Inspection

If I was considering an aircraft purchase I'd take a mechanic I trust rather than hiring a stranger. Especially with something like a PA-12, which has more pitfalls and potential expensive repair issues than most aircraft models. A mechanic who knows fabric Pipers would be important but one who's got PA-12 experience would really be worth his plane ticket. BTW, I'd demand a thorough annual inspection before I bought a PA-12 unless your plan is to buy a project airplane. Even then I'd want a detailed and thorough inspection.

Thanks, Stewart. Exactly the kind of advice I'm looking for. Your past postings on the PA-12 are a big part of my decision to go ahead and buy one, so I'm not going to stop listening to you now. Thanks again.

Re: Help Needed: DC Area PA-12 Pre-Buy Inspection

In a nutshell I think an aircraft owner's relationship with his mechanics is very important. I trust my life to the guys who wrench on my planes so I value their skills and abilities. I have 4 go-to mechanics. While none has any particular weakness they each have particular strengths. If I was buying another fabric Piper I'd want the guy who's best with tube and fabric to inspect it. The newest PA-12 in the fleet is 65 years old. The airframe is made of low-tech tubing assembled with low-tech welding equipment and techniques. I'd want to assure what I was buying before I traded any money for keys. Things like bungee cords, instruments, and even engines are easy to fix. PA-12 airframes aren't easy or inexpensive to work on. Check for rusted tubes, bent longerons, and funky rigging among other things. Keep your eyes open and your guard up. Good luck!
