Here's some #'s for ya, or, how I spent my Sat. nite

I tried to use my GPS on the ground to measure off a piece of turf I wanted to land on, mainly to double-check my timed-whilke-flying length. My 196 calls out up to 500', then goes to decimals of a mile. I ended up with a waypoint in the middle of the strip, and checked how far to each end.

Cessna Skywagon -- accept no substitute!
This would be a great iphone app!! Hit "Start measure" and "stop measure" and based on GPS movement it will give you distance.

Of course, their are a bunch. A free one is "Distance Meter Free". You just hit stop and start. I'll try it next time I fly
