HIGH SIERRA FLY-IN DETAILS & PILOT INFO PLEASE READ

As of 4pm today, The current forecast is still looking very good for us!! =D> =D>

http://www.accuweather.com/en/us/fallon-nv/89406/october-weather/334439

The following is good information for you.

If you have not signed up yet in the Events area on this site, please do so. Its not mandatory but helps. Currently 27 planes signed up and I know of another 20 that are not on this site attending. Thank you!

We will be arriving on Thursday the 24th, mid-day to the location for set up. Most arrivals will be Friday with people departing for home on Sunday 27th after breakfast but encourage you to arrive Thursday for some good flying.

YOU ARE ON YOR OWN FOR FOOD THURSDAY should you be arriving then. We will be flying out to have some fun Friday morning returning early to see everyone arrive.

FRIDAY NIGHTS DINNER IS A POTLUCK OR ON YOUR OWN

Saturday morning pilot brief will be held at 8am. This is a big fly out morning with aircraft going in all sorts of directions.

Saturday afternoon the fun really starts:

3pm – Sierra Nevada Keg is tapped!

3pm SPOT Pumpkin Drop contest – PRIZE for 1st place (BRING PUMPKINS)

600pm – Cowboy Dinner – CATERED!!!! We have a very good dinner planned for EVERYONE. Tri-tip, Chicken, Cowboy beans, Salad and Appetizers. Man Wielding Fire is cooking for us with his rotisserie. You do not need food for Saturday night.

Sunset – LARGE WHITE MANS FIRE UNTIL YOU GO TO BED

Sunday morning breakfast is also catered. You don’t not need food for Sunday morning. Man Wielding Fire is cooking B&G for all of us!!!

In addition to all of this, we currently have an electric operated skeet thrower if you like guns. 5 boxes of clay pigeons. (Bring more if you have em) and now…50lbs of Tannerite. #-o #-o We are going to have some fun! (EAR PLUGS Suggested) Gun and shooting safety a MUST!!!

We have 2 professional photographers on hand taking photos of you all weekend. You can ask them for more details should you want some pictures of you and your plane in action.

Grant is bringing his multi-stage flame thrower for the darkness.

A number of folks are driving in with four wheelers and RC aircraft. We even have an RC heli with cameras to capture the event!

WIVES AND KIDS ARE WELCOME!!!!

We have a HIS and HERS porta-potie on site.

Remember, aircraft fuel is very close. You have 4 options with a discount at KCXP. Yerington is close as is Minden and Silver springs.

FREE T-Shirts to all of those that arrive! I will post a photo soon.

Kevin Quinn (Aktahoe) and all of the volunteers do not accept any responsibility for this event. This event is a volunteer event and all of those attending have done so by their own means and will. Zero monies have been collected from any of the participants. The host has paid for food, toilets, firewood and T-shirts. Donations are accepted.

Remember to bring your good attitude and fly safe! Read the pilot info and do not land if you do not feel comfortable. Please obey all traffic patterns. There will be a ground radio person at all times for additional info if required.

Piperpainter made this great airport diagram and info. Please do not park in the middle of the lake bed. Use the West and South shoreline for parking. Use the east-west runway. 99% of the time we land and depart toward the East. A Flag will be flying on the West end.

Be aware of your run-ups and whats behind you. Practice caution at all times!! Its easy to push your aircraft away from others to prevent blasting them with dirt. [-X

Any questions, please send a PM to Aktahoe1 on this site or to: [email protected]. There is cell service on the lake bed but can be spotty.

The other HSF thread has a lot of photos and videos of the lake bed itself along with a number of fly out options.

Print this out for your reference. If you have never been here, please do at least one fly over for familiarization.

TPA is 5500'

HIGH SIERRA FLY-IN DETAILS & PILOT INFO PLEASE READ

I have my fingers crossed my toes crossed my eyes crossed, for good weather.

I'm really worried because here in northwest Oregon our weather is phenomenal right now. Normally phenomenal weather does not last long enough to get us through the fly in.

But hope springs eternal!

Re: HIGH SIERRA FLY-IN DETAILS & PILOT INFO PLEASE READ

The entire west coast looks to be under a big ole Rex Block next week as the weather forecast continues to look better and better each day.

We are getting close with now 35 planes signed up here and I can think of another 10 on this forum posturing on the last minute weather call and another 10-15 planes not on this forum attending for certain. Please do sign up if you have not yet (for a numbers guesstament) so we have plenty of food. Betting we have around 60-70 planes for certain.

This is yesterday. I even rolled the field with my measurement gage again and you have 1270' from touchdown to where I am standing in this photo. You have an additional 250' if you roll long and down the road as shown here. Conditions are "Hard and Smooth"

aktahoe1 wrote:big ole Rex Block next week

Today I learned what a Rex Block is.

meteorologist jeff haby wrote:The Rex Block is a blocking pattern that in relation to the United States occurs most often in the spring and most often occurs along or near the West Coast. A Rex Block has two adjacent highs and lows. The most impressive Rex Blocks will have a strong low pressure next to a strong high pressure. The high pressure will be located in a generally north direction from the low pressure. The low associated with the Rex Block is not completely cut-off from the upper level flow, but does have little east-west movement. Strong ridging north of the low causes the airflow to move from high latitudes to low latitudes with little comparable west-east movement of the air. The airflow pattern follows a backward "S" trajectory. In the example image, air flowing into the West Coast of Canada then flows south into the Pacific off the Mexican West Coast. Once the flow leaves the Rex Block, it can finally make some significant progress to the east.

Re: HIGH SIERRA FLY-IN DETAILS & PILOT INFO PLEASE READ

We deal with Rex Blocks in AK during the winter as it creates spectacular weather...except in AK when the high pressure builds so do the winds... For us here on the west coast winds are generally abated. I am sounding like a broken record here but the weather looks to be getting better by the day. Winds less than 5knts are forecasted now.

Someone asked about pattern attitude at the lake bed.

TPA is 5500'. Thats a 1000 above.

Just have good radio comms please.

Here is Coz and his 172 at 3SGS this AM. He had no problem! Nice work Steve!

He was up and out at about the halfway point very easily

And a quick trip to "3 Wagons" note...."Wild horses" (just around the corner) had about 80 head of wild horses. What a site to see...

Where can you be found Thursday around mid-morning?
Will you need any set up help?

We have A LOT of firewood inbound!

I will be there Tom sometime mid day Thursday I suspect. Thinking around pm or so I bet. Set up is easy as we have a number of folks driving in. Do a little flying that night and some good beer drinking by the fire.

See you soon!

Fuel update here from KCXP - $4.99 is the price we are getting from Carson. You do not need a discount code or anything. They are making the price for this weekend starting Friday-Sunday. Thats the best fuel price around for certain!
