Lynn Sanderson (Dirtstrip) passed away from natural causes in May 2013. He was a great contributor and will be missed dearly.

Looks pretty tight!!!
Must be a helluva x wind at times, with over shooting the base to final and then having to land cross ways on the strip!
Wonder how much that cloud of blue smoke costs from the tires?
Glad it's not me!

I flew in there, as a passenger, in 1968, and I remember the POV out the window was unlike ANY of any other airline ride I had ever had
I'd pay extra if a major airline had an optional low level route:max altitude of 1500'agl or so, that would sure make those cross country flights more enjoyable for me. I'm not holding my breath that it'll happen........

I did that approach "billions" of times. I considered it the last "fun" thing we got to do at the airline (while flying). Sorry to see the old airport close. The approach brought you straight into the mountain with the checkerboard. Once you got a visual on the checkerboard you tracked lighting on the ground that arced around to line up with the runway. Very seldom do we fly these things with reference to the ground so it's difficult getting a mental picture of what your turn radius is going to be. That was what caused most of the overshoot problems while trying to line up with final. If there was much of a right crosswind the problem just got worse. The real scary part was holding short of the runway waiting for departure while these guys were blowing through final and lining up to "T-bone" you.

I have a Sci-Fi anime movie that shows the same from-the-street view of airliners going in for a landing over the buildings. I remember thinking that the large monster stomping Tokyo was more realistic than those landing scenes. Oh well! #-o

That was a really well done video, and great music too. It's fun to see just how maneuverable those 747's really are. Although, if they were taildraggers those guys would have some bigger problems to deal with...talk about cockeyed touchdowns. :)

Reminds me of this oldy but goody.
