Horizontal/vertical stabilizer rib profile for flat slab fab

Looking for help on...identifying fabric covered certified aircraft using NACA 0006 through NACA 0012 airfoils. There is a good amount of published research material. One research paper with formulas that caused my eyes to glaze over..looking for the airplanes. I've seen them on two different certified fabric covered aircraft but I don't recall the aircraft. What I want to do is add fir strips to create the NACA 0006 airfoil on my Pacer horizontal stabilizer. On the vertical stabilizer want to use NACA 0012 at the lower former and decrease to the NACA 0006 at the former toward the top of the stabilizer. Less drag and better trim stability.. Pat Fagan's Bearhawk, the Bearhawk Patrol and I believe Performance STOL utilize similar profiles on their vertical stabilizer.

Look at the Bellanca 14 series. I THINK I remember an airfoiled stabilizer.

The 0009 and its ilk are fairly well accepted for tail surfaces. Very unlikely that you will have any problems, but you need to check with a real aero guy just to make sure.

Good to know. Thanks. Since I'll be creating the shape from sealed fir and securing to the structure between the leading and trailing edges with epoxy, what will the change or modification be considered? I'm thinking major... Thing is I don't know my arse from six bits....when it comes to the regulations. But I can fabricate just about anything and I didn't stay at the....what's the name of that hotel?

If you're proposing to do this to a certificated airplane, it would most definitely be considered a "major alteration" by the FAA. That would require either an STC or a field approval. I seriously doubt any FSDO would issue a field approval on something like this.

You could put the airplane in the "Experimental-Flight Test and Engineering" category for a time to experiment with this if you want. You'll have to apply to the FAA for a new airworthiness certificate, then another to go back to original configuration.

You might want to talk to Doug Keller in Oregon. Doug developed a set of slotted flaps for the experimental Cub market. He also experimented with an airfoil on the lower surface of the tail, but apparently concluded that wasn't necessary. His web site: http://www.performancestol.com/about_us.htm

Thanks will make that call. I'd like to put together/generate dwg's, math, list of other aircraft so equipped for a one time stc or field approval.
