I got a great spot for ya. Gateway(Hubbard) Colo. Nice BLM strip. River camping, great resort w/old car museum and a good restaurant w/great margaritas and beautiful southwest red rock canyons. dirt strips and rivers.

Hey Strata I don't have any dates in mind, but I would say sooner rather than later. Days are getting shorter and nights cooler for camping. I just thought I would throw it out see if Zane wanted to squeeze in one more gathering, if not we can just meet up with whoever is interested and have a little fun. I should also be down in Sedona in a couple weeks. Gary

I was thinking last night, probably the best time to go would be around a full moon. The next one Oct.7. So I would say good dates may be Oct. 6-8. Storms should be over, air cooler and more stable for most of the day. Needles Outpost may be closed my then, but I can check. They like to close in Sept. For those that don't know, that is a good little cafe/store with a good dirt strip. They also have a very good general store/deli at Gateway. Gary

Wow, lived in that part of the country for a number of years (across the line in Utah) and never been through that spot.

What hurts is I will be down in Montana with my plane during that time. Hmmm, showing 5:49, 46 gallons of fuel, direct from S27. Beer/fuel stop in Grand Junction on the way. Tempting.

I probably won't be able to make this fly-in, but you guys certainly don't need my help to plan it. When you agree on a date, I will post it in the events section on the homepage.

Well I guess that's the best weekend for me, so lets say it's on for Oct. 6,7 and8. and see who shows up. Any one that wants to go say yeah. For those that haven't flown this area before, this is some of the most scenic country you will get to fly. Like flying in the Grand Canyon, with no restrictions. You can also buy beer in Gateway, and most aything else you might need. Days should be pretty warm and nights pretty cool. I would say bring a bike if you have the room. Gary

I'd love to make that, I'll check with my co-pilot about the date. I flew out that way today (over grand junction and on to Gunnison) and it is a really pretty area.

What's the strip like? All I can find on it is the Google Earth photo and one NTSB accident report

Google Earth shows it is has about 1600-1700 feet easily useable (with about 700 more that looks kind of iffy but who knows?), and a 25 foot vertical gradient over that distance.

I was on the strip about a month ago and it was in very good shape. I think it's around 2600' and probably close to 100'wide. You can go to Utah Backcountry Pilots. look up airports and plug in Hubbard. It is a gentle upslope away from the river, I don't remember the runway numbers but I think it would be uphill, generally to the southeast. Gary

The Utah Back Country Pilots Association is having a fly-in that weekend at Mineral Canyon by Moab (check the website for details and pictures). I might have to split my time and do both!
