How are you gonna cook your bird?

Heard a good tip the other day:

Don't stuff the turkey with stuffing. All the moisture the stuffing absorbs just reduces the juiciness of the final product.

Also, basting does nothing. Might as well just use those drippings for the gravy. Cook him at like 450 for 2 hrs, then reduce to 350 for as long as it takes to get the internal temp to 180. (I think that's what I heard...)

I've always wanted to deep fry one but have never gotten around to getting the fryer together.

Half a century spent proving “it is better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”

Flying and cooking my two favorite things;
I'm the Meat Man so we like trying different things every once in a while. We have deep fried turkey a time or two and this year we are going to cook a small bird on the grill. Works good with chicken also.Indirect heat is the key,very juicey like you said with nothig stuffed inside. Some like the beer can method but you don't really need it.
Happy Thanksgiving All.

Attitude is the difference between an ordeal or an adventure.

You should it is some of the best tasting bird I've had. As well it being so moist and juicy and well unhealthily but hey it's thanksgiving.

Don't think we are doing that this year, just in the oven, my uncle is in charge of that.

Hands down the best turkey I've ever had was smoked over alder chips. We made the smoker out of a 55 gallon avgas drum on its side, with a hinged door for tending the meat. (All the drum paint and avgas was removed first by flame, wire brush and angle grinder)

The combustion chamber was a 5-gallon drum suspended underneath, with a stick fire and a tray for brine-soaked alder chips. We got the chips by cutting back some alder and feeding it through the chipper.

Took about 8 hours of smoking as I recall. The results were more than worth all the work.
