How do we get our private strip on Sectional

My sweetie pie and I have a long thin 80 acres that is 18 miles SSW of 2E5 which is Dell City Municipal. We had it graded eight years ago, and fly a Cessna 140, and several ultralights from it. As soon as we get the new hanger built, I will stop paying rent at T-27, (Horizon Airport), and bring my Taylorcraft BC65 out here as well. I have a few flying friends that have flown in and out of our 4,700 by 90 foot mowed strip as well, and a few have asked why we don't have our place on the sectional, but NONE of them know how to do it, or how much it will cost us. Are there any drawbacks to having our place on the charts?

Re: How do we get our private strip on Sectional

I did mine the legal way back in 2000.... First I got the 7460 form from the FAA. http://www.faa.gov/forms/index.cfm/go/d ... tID/186273.

Then after a couple of months they had finished my airspace study I got the approval back from them.... I took that to the local county planning office and petitioned for a conditional use permit.... That got me three reading in front of that board, then it went to the county commisioners for three more readings for the public to comment... There is another story there and if you search this site ,it is archived somewhere.... About a month or so later I get a call from the charting office in DC asked if i wanted it on the sectional and to verify all the info they had is correct.... The rest is history...

In your case,,,,,,,, if it a rogue airport and no government agency knows about it. I am not sure how you can get it on the sectionals ,AFDs etc.... Give it a try and let us know how it went.. [-o<

Re: How do we get our private strip on Sectional

To establish a new landing facility, Ill pull the file for you and get the details. I just got mine after 3 years. It was at the bottom of a stack on someones desk and got moved around and around but not taken care of. After a bunch of calls over 2 1/2 years it would move one step fwd. Finally got it in the mail yesterday. No cost. They want to know if there is a school, church, landfill close by. They said that I had to make rt traffic for one of my runways because of an old private strip. I explained that it has not been used for 20 years and now crops. I said to not worry that I would gladdly make rt turns the rest of my life if they would just move this fwd one step. "How to get on the sectional" The statement I was told is that it may not get on the sectional because of clutter but you would have an identifier in the system. It seems that guys apply and get the paperwork but want to see it on the map or feel it doesnt count.

Re: How do we get our private strip on Sectional

THANKS guys, I know both County Judges well, One of them did the custom work on setting up my 1911 A-1 for me. I am also on real good speaking terms with the officials in the town of Dell City, (population 225). The biggest reason that I was thinking of doing this, is that every time I have someone that wants to fly into here, I have to give them the GPS numbers for the landing threshold for RWY 08. Out here in far west Texas, there are a bunch of Ranch strips that are not registered, or on any map, so other than making it easier for my non GPS equipped friends flying entry level ultralights, there is no real need to do this, unless DHS is going to require that they know of every mowed field that has it's owner's airplane flying off it registered with them.

I had mine charted so any pilot with an emergency could find the runway and possibly save their life.... And, don't just think the charting and location data will be used by all software providers..... Strange as it sounds, my strip shows up on sectionals, Airnav and other AFD's. It is even on my buddies Blackberry, IPhone ..Etc..... last year I was flying a friends NEW 400,000 182 with the Garmin glass panel.......My strip, 2WY3, was NOT in that database.. [-X [-X ..

Re: How do we get our private strip on Sectional

I sent in all the paper work and supposedly it is all approved, received that paper work??
Has been on someones desk in DC for a year, a few calls, as the guy from the Seattle center said, there is only 1 guy doing the chart upgrades, could take a couple of years??
Good luck, GT

Welcome if you ever get this way.
Place to camp, should be able to find a set of wheels to get to the Lake.

Re: How do we get our private strip on Sectional

My old strip was on the charts for 15 years. 6 years ago I told them I had moved it a mile away and gave them all the new info. Still waiting....good thing I don't care, it's just a fun thing to do. Not like it's going to effect my flying any.

Re: How do we get our private strip on Sectional

My strip cost me about $400 in paperwork and fees went through the Oregon Aeronautics department and it took about six months to get put on the map pretty much a straightforward process

Hey Brie, you still haven't sent me the coordinates for your strip. I think it's been about 5 years since I flew in there, and I can't remember where it is. (Got a classic case of CRS)

Re: How do we get our private strip on Sectional

NO PROBLEM Dave, (I didn't know that you were on this site, silly me). HERE are the numbers.

31 deg. 45 min. 07.60 sec. NORTH
105 Deg. 24 Min. 31.58 Sec. WEST
The strip is SOUTH of the two lane road, HWY 62-180, and runs 08-26, NOT the abandoned runway that runs north south that is about two miles west of our place and on the NORTH side of 62-180, with a commercial steel hanger on it.

Anyone reading this is welcome too, if the coffee is not hot, we'll make some.
The field runs uphill as you go East, and there are residential height power poles a quarter mile east of the east threshold with NO ORANGE BALLS. The area to the West of the airstrip, is nothing but range grass for about five miles, where there is a good sized hill. LEFT HAND PATTERN, PLEASE Buzz the runway before landing, so I can chain up the dog, who doesn't know about Propellers yet.

By the way folks, Dave has a REALLY nice Cessna. He let me fly the approach to the Timberon, N.M. airport with him in it, so I would know how to do it. (We have an acre up there a mile from the Runway).

Re: How do we get our private strip on Sectional

I do not see anyone mentioning how you are going to cover liability if open to the public.
Maybe put it on the chart with "PVT" or Xed out?

The lawyer for a friend of mine told him to put Xs on his for the public and then allow those who have been checked out on the approach and abort points to use the strip.

Lawyer said keeping it off the chart and Xed out should keep any foolhardy 'public' problems at bay.
Just something I heard once upon a time!

Re: How do we get our private strip on Sectional

As it was explained to me they go on the chart as private So if anyone lands there without your Permission you have no liability also by having it marked as an airport if sometime down the road a bunch of high-rise buildings go in you are under consideration due to the fact you have an official airstrip.
And they wouldn't necessarily be able to in cringe on your approach path etc.

Mine was marked private AND hazardous. At 6150'asl. 400' long , and a 14 % grade I didn't worry about liability

Well, our place isn't as dicey as yours. As a matter of fact, Dave R, just flew out of here, after spending half an hour with us. The west Texas slightly quartering headwinds eased the boredom of his approach, and shortened the takeoff run considerably. Safe Flight Home Dave!!

Hello,
I checked the block on both the preliminary and final FAA applications to not have my private airstrip listed on the Sectional Chart. Obviously that didn't work.

Re: How do we get our private strip on Sectional

Got back just fine, landed in brown out conditions at T27. Sand storm from hell! Your strip is in good conditions, no problem for my C175, but you should turn the fan off next time I come through. :?
My GPS post flight indicated I had landed at 65TX, Flying Eagle Ranch. You have neighbors with a runway?
Anyone know where I find a set of "curb feelers" like we had on our cars many years ago? I could use a pair on my plane

Re: How do we get our private strip on Sectional

Glad you made it back OK Dave. Flying Eagle is the airport that is a mile and a quarter to the west north west of us with his runway running North South. That place was owned by the guy that had the wreck of a C421 that he was trying to fix to sell to some sucker. I understand that he is currently the guest of the Federal Government over some less than kosher land dealings. A farmer bought the place, and will not use it for flying.

Re: How do we get our private strip on Sectional

A few years ago, I suggested that a friend of mine get his airstrip registered with the FAA, due to it only being about 1-1/2 mile from our county airport which was in line to get an instrument approach (which just now is finally coming to pass). Also just in case anyone started complaining to the county about his airstrip being hazardous or a nuisance, he would be able to say it was an official FAA approved airport and that would give him some sort of legitimacy. He did so, it involved calling the FAA & filling out a bunch of paperwork, then waiting a good long while. He asked that it not be put on the sectional.
Unless you've got a similar issue with complainers and/or nearby airports, schools, etc I'd try to stay below the radar and leave it unlisted & uncharted. Being official does carry some liability, esp if you're charted. Just give people your lat/long & tell them to buy a cheap GPS if they don't have one already.
