Re: How far to your hangar?

How did I know I would get a bunch of replies of you lucky SOB's that live on your strip :D Someday I hope to be set up like that. I would fly several times a day if that was the case. Today it took me longer to get out there and back than my flight was. I guess I should be fortunate to have my own plane in a hangar though. After 5 years of renting any drive is worth it to be able to pull your own bird out into the rising sunlight and blaze into the sky. This morning I was cruising a river at about 50 ft agl and a song that I love came on my IPOD (random play all) and the moment was pretty sureal. Anyone remember the english band Oasis?

10 minutes for me. I'd love to have my own strip, but then I'd have to mow it! :)

Re: How far to your hangar?

No hangar but the plane in the summer is about 75 feet from the front porch tied up to my dock.

In the summer about 5 miles to a lonely dirt strip with an occasional cow visiting. :?

Re: How far to your hangar?

Home office is at one end of the house -- I'm sitting there now.
Door to hangar is 3 feet from my office door.
Open hangar door and...
- beer refrigerator is immediately at left.
- 206 is about 10 feet straight ahead.
- 2140 ft grass (or41) is about 150 ft down the driveway -- not far enough to get it warmed up.

Re: How far to your hangar?

In the summer, it is just a walk out the back door to the dock, then a 7 mile long water runway. Still waiting permission from MNR to put in a hanger/boat house. Winter storage is a 6 hour drive.

Re: How far to your hangar?

Oregon 180 brought up the down side to owning your own strip, ...mowing the grass every week, or more often in the spring and early summer. I have an 18 foot finish mower, but it still takes about an hour. Then there are the issues of snow in the winter. Property tax, but I guess you all are paying that too in the "hangar rent" fees. With all that, it is still the way to go IMO.

Re: How far to your hangar?

I drive about 30 mins to my hanger right now . I am blessed to have 25 acres right on the crest of gently rolling hills in northern Maryland where I just installed a 1000' strip ( let's call it a very flat and smooth hayfield that yields about 16 cuttings a year) I'm in the process of getting the hayfield zoned and running into a wall. The neighbors don't seem to mind any . It's the way they wrote the special exception that makes private runways in my county immpossible to obtain. So until I get the law changed it will have to be a hayfield.

Here is what they said to the last guy who tried.

Re: How far to your hangar?

Out the house door, down the steps, across to the hanger door is maybe 70'. One nice perk is being able to have the idling/warming up plane sitting there, while you make a quick trip back into the house for a last minute bathroom break! Unpacking/packing after or before a trip is a lot more convinent also. The only drawback to living so close to your hanger and airstrip is it quickly spoils you...I've been doing it for 30+ years and can't imagine doing it otherwise. On my mountainside strip its a real safety factor, being able to eyeball conditions way before flight, much better then just showing up and taking off. Like right now.... turning my head and looking out the office window shows the wind is 20+mph, and direct cross, no fun flying today!
I rent space for my crane biz down in the valley 20 miles away, I SHOULD live in town, on flat ground, right next to my crane yard, and build a house right there.....but where would I land??? My avatar shows a rare maintenance visit of my crane at my home shop, but no way can I drive it up and down the mountain on a routine basis. As usual, flying comes first!!

About 10 miles and 15 minutes, on country roads. Not back yard, but not too bad.

Around 1,500 feet to the Thrush, 1,800 feet to the 180 and about 47 miles (driving) to the Ag-Cat's.

Re: How far to your hangar?

Not sure of the miles. About 20-25 minutes. Nothing closer that I can afford, that's for sure.

I've noticed Zane hasn't chimed in. I know he has us all beat (and not in a good way timewise).

Re: How far to your hangar?

There's something about this I don't understand . . .

Shouldn't it be, "How far to your home?"

My home is 9.5 miles from my hangar. One stop sign either way, never any traffic slowdown, or much traffic at all except for the couple of mile on Hwy 395. Takes a bit less than 15 minutes, though this varies some depending on what's cooking for supper.

Re: How far to your hangar?

Well, put me in as one of the lucky guys. My log house is on one side of my 80' wide strip and the hanger is on the other side of it. SO I walk out the house....look both ways to make sure no one is on approach...cross the strip and I'm in the hanger. :D Now I do keep my 172 in town and that is close to 30 miles. Noticing I don't seem to fly that one much anymore unless I need to go someplace farther away or need mor carrying capacity.

About 7 miles to the little airplane. 7S9. Finished, heated hangar office. Nicest I've ever had. Work is usually one day away if it's in the states, two or more if it's in Europe or OZ.
