How is the snow melting in Idaho?

Hey Idaho boys... anyone flown over the strips on the Selway lately? Are Moose Creek and Shearer snow free yet?

Thanks,

I don't know about those strips but Cascade and McCall still have about 2 ft. Maybe Low and Slow knows.

2 feet? We've still got 4' or more in the yard. I heard just today that the Selway Lodge "looked pretty good." I'm not exactly sure what that meant, but I'm guessing with as low as it is, it's starting to melt. It's probably muddy.

I was in Taylor Ranch a couple weeks ago - they snow blow the runway there, and the sides were at least a foot deep, with about 2" on the runway.

It was 41F here yesterday, warmest it's been since last fall.

Hope that helps.

I talked to a friend up in Grangeville this morning and they had 3'' there in town, so I would imagine there is a fair amount left in the hills.

with all that snow I immagine the streams will be flowing pretty heavy when we have the fly in this June.

It takes a big man to cry. But it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.

Thanks for the replies. I am trying to time my annual spring bear hunt.

I had to drive my prop from BOI to Lewiston yesterday. It looks like this;
None here in Gooding to BOI. None up the hills until you get past horseshoe bend. Then solid snow until you get about to Riggins. Then none until you get up the grade a ways. Then a little around Grangeville (I've had a friend working up there for three weeks even though it keeps snowing, it keeps melting). Then none from about Lapwai to Lewiston.
Pretty much altitude dependent. I went out to the east last weekend and there was about 8" to a foot out at Hollow Top, Carey, and Picabo. They have been plowing Carey and Picabo though so they are open.

I use this site to monitor the snow melt here in Idaho. Some of the observation sites have snow depth reports. Unfortunately there isn't any in the Selway area. I sure hope the melt starts soon...some of the guys I float with are getting nervous that the peak runoff on the Selway will hit when we are supposed to launch...

lowflying'G3, if you want, I might be able to fly you up to Lewiston to pick your prop up if you haven't already. I'm a member of the T-Craft Aero club in Nampa and just want to be helpful as well as build some hours. Just a thought.

Gettin' shorter!

Yeah it's CLOSE to that now. Had to do a bit of trimmin' to keep the shape. We'll call it a 105 now! By the way I did forget to call, and I can't do a deal that big now but I appreciate the thought. We'll see how it goes solo this year, I'm hopeful for the future.
Cascade, I appreciate the thought but I was bringing it back to the plane. We disassembled it when I got there for the annual two weeks ago and flew it to BOI in the 206 for O/H. Once the O/H is complete it has to stay together so I had to drive it back. I'm going to pick up the airplane on Monday but I have already lined up a ride. Thanks anyway.

Snow depth in ID

For those guys in the northern states such as NY, MN, MI, ND, ID, MT, ID and WA. What is the snow pack like but more importantly, how thick is the ice on the lakes or are they starting to open up? Leaving from Maine for Ketchikan in three weeks. Will be flying the 180 on straight floats if lakes start to open up soon.

Help me out here! Is Maine the only state with large amounts of snow left? Whats the conditions like across the northern states? Mike V, what does MN look like? Straight floats from Maine to Ketchikan AK in three weeks. Is it possible or just a dream :P

Southern Idaho might be fine, but up here, I doubt it. It was 3F this am, and well below zero with 5" of fresh snow over the weekend. Our lake (Payette Lake in McCall) is still completely solid, and the guess is now early May for breakup. We're at 5,000' here.

Hope that helps on this end.

Here in Olympia Washington OLM up until 2 days ago, we had snow at 500 feet. It snowed and hailed about 5 days ago...still snow at 2000. The warming trend should begin soon.

Re: Moose creek

Nobody has said anything about the Flying B webcam, so here it is:

http://www.flyingresortranches.com/cam/index.htm

It's at 3647ft, so if it's snow free, which it certainly looks like, it should be a good stand-in for Moose Creek, at 2450ft. Doesn't look like any grass is getting green yet, though.....so way too early for MY old butt in a tent! 8)

BTW, here's an excerpt from AirNav.com:

- RY 01/19 MUDDY SPRING & WINTER. USE RY 04/22 EARLY SPRING & LATE FALL/WINTER WHEN PSBL DUE TO BETTER DRAINAGE & FIRMER SFC. RYS SUBJECT TO TEMP CLOSURES.
- CTC USFS AMGR 208-926-4258 FOR BRIEFINGS & RY CONDITIONS.
- RY 01/19 CLSD 1 NOV THRU MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND; EXCEPT FOR SKIS ON SNOW.
- BIG GAME ANIMALS ON & INVOF OF ARPT.
