How much does it cost in your state

In California you pay sales tax on the plane when you buy it. 7.25% in Siskiyou county and 8.25 I believe in some of the other counties.

Then yearly property tax of about 1% of the purchase price and that goes up a little each year.

Now that I have 1600 hrs on a 1500 TBO engine and aircraft values have gone down I will try to get it reapraised.. Good luck.

What is it in your state? Going to retire soon and may move out of CA.

It is so expensive in Idaho, 6% sales tax when you buy and yearly registration at $1 per 100lb of gross weight, that you should stay in Cali or move anywhere but Idaho

The assessor was my best friend when I lived in California years ago. He couldn't wait to jack my taxes up every year  . I see he hasn't changed! :D Glad I left.

Michigan is also 6% sales tax on purchase price and $.01 per pound of gross weight yearly. The yearly fee is a registration fee and per Michigan law prevents the taxing of the aircraft as personal property by the state or any local government. Also gets you a state published Michigan airport directory yearly, registering as a pilot at no cost (one time) gets you a state published chart yearly which covers the Michigan portions of 4 sectional charts. I don't think you would like it here either, snow and cold.

Ohio

...in the buckeye state, no sales tax if you buy from an individual in state. Sales tax if from a dealer or an out of state individual.

Plus a yearly fee of $35, I think, for a two place plane.

Well

I think Oregon is $50.00 for the 182, and no sales tax.

Jeez memory is the first thing to go!

Robert "Bub" Wright, aka Skylane, passed away in November of 2011. He was a beloved community member and will be missed.

"Use tax" (aka sales tax) of around 8.3% on the blue book value of the airplane-- I guess they got tired of phony $5K bill-of-sales for $100K airplanes. Trouble is, if you have a real bill-of-sale for what they think os too low a price they give you a hard time about it. (Same deal with used car purchases- use tax on bluebook). Plus about $60 a year registration for a single engine.

Cessna Skywagon -- accept no substitute!

Minnesota charges sales tax (I think ~7%) on a purchase of an airplane. If the airplane is old, as in a "classic", there is a one time registration fee, then nada annually. If its newer, an assessment annually.

I already owned my plane when I got here, so didn't have to pay tax at all, just the one time $25 fee.

Alaska--no sales tax, no aircraft registration, no fees. No services.

Texas -- no tax on private sales -- tax through dealers -- no state registration or property tax for individuals -- property tax for business owned A/C
Problem in TX are the border jumpers and the politicians who pander to them ( Bush, gov Perry the Gov. attorneys who put border guards in jail and give visas to drug runners )

The yearly registration is also based on age in Montana. I pay $25 a year for my 6 seat Bonanza. Best thing is all the money goes to Monatana Aeronautics.

No to get off topic but when I flew to Butte earlier this year there were airport fees up the wazoo. Is it like that all over the state. Fees were...ramps fees charged by the airport, ramp fee charged by the FBO, over night fee, fueling fee. The FBO waived their ramp fee because I fueled but all the other fees still applied.

Taxes

Funny how people blame the person that was handed a problem vs the person created the whole issue. "Illegal Immigration" :? I added plane and toys!!

Tax his plane,

Tax his toys,

Tax his land,

Tax his bed,

Tax the table

At which he's fed.

Tax his tractor,

Tax his mule,

Teach him taxes

Are the rule.

Tax his work,

Tax his pay,

He works for peanuts

Anyway!

Tax his cow,

Tax his goat,

Tax his pants,

Tax his coat.

Tax his ties,

Tax his shirt,

Tax his work,

Tax his dirt.

Tax his tobacco,

Tax his drink,

Tax him if he

Tries to think.

Tax his cigars,

Tax his beers,

If he cries,

then Tax his tears.

Tax his car,

Tax his gas,

Find other ways

To tax his a$$.

Tax all he has

Then let him know

That you won't be done

Till he has no dough.

When he screams and hollers,

Then tax him some more,

Tax him till

He's good and sore.

Then tax his coffin,

& Tax his grave,

Tax the sod in

Which he's laid.

Put these words

upon his tomb,

" Taxes drove me to my doom..."

When he's gone,

Do not relax,

Its time to apply

The inheritance tax.

Accounts Receivable Tax

CDL license Tax

STILL THINK THIS IS FUNNY?

Not one of these taxes existed 100 years ago, and our nation

was the most prosperous in the world.

We had absolutely no national debt, had the largest middle

class in the world, and Mom stayed home to raise the kids.

What in the hell happened? Can you spell "politicians!"

And I still have to "press 1" for English!?!?!?!?

Whee,

No, that is not common. I was in GTF this last summer, got in as T Storms were gathering, needing fuel. Went to the FBO, parked for the night, no fee, no landing fee, fueled there, and price was lower than many in the country I've seen, people were very friendly, hotels easy distance, and they called a hotel van. Holman Aviation. Nice folks, no hassle, and the lady at the front desk chewed on the line guys cause they hadn't cleaned my windshield in the morning. I told her to lighten up, cause I'd told em not to. That's my job.

That sounds right, and it's per-year. And most people don't even know they're supposed to send it in. It was a couple years before I heard. Fee goes to the state av system. Pilots are also supposed to pay $8 / yr, which goes to to the state av dept, for SAR.

Oregon has income tax, no sales tax, and property tax on real estate only, no personal property taxes.

When I bought my Tri-Pacer from a guy at NutTree, he offered to fly it up -- a 'sentimental journey' that saved me the trouble (it wasn't a good time for me) of ferrying it up to Portland. That allowed us to make the transaction in Oregon so avoided the CA sales tax.

If you're looking for somewhere to relocate, the summers and winters are both mild, here in the valley. We probably also have more marginal flying days than some other places in the world.

Fixed it for you. In the future, make sure you spread the word on how bad living in Oregon is.

Jeez, another benefit of this forum. I was just getting ready to move to Oregon. What a mistake that would apparently be! 8)

I'll tell you how communist Kalifornia has become, the airport managers here have to give the county tax assessors all the data on the the aircraft, either tied down or hangared, yearly, including registration and insurance info (hull value???) and then you get a form from the tax assessor asking how much you paid for the plane, if it has been re-engined, what avionics and accessories are on board etc. They take all this data and if the value doesn't seem high enough, they'll come up with their own, then they send you your annual personal property tax bill. Plane doesn't even have to be registered to a Kalifornia owner, just has to be here a certain amount of time.

What a privledge it is to live in the Golden State

Don't even ask about the gun laws...
