A recent excursion off the runway on takeoff, they had just got it back from annual. Not how I like to see a classic aeroplane look, there were no injuries apart from a couple of scratches.

Damn, we're running out of Stinsons.
My old Stinson crashed and burnt last summer, no injuries.

That's what I was thinking. My 108 might be pretty rare by the time I get it flying.

Ouch! How do you hit hard enough to fold a wing and not bend a prop?

Re: How not to put a plane in the hangar

Lack of co-ordination, inexperience and panic. The story goes that on take off he lifted the tail to quickly, yawed left didn't co-ordinate and froze. The fella that witnessed it reported that no power was reduced at all. The pilot reported that it was a brake problem. I believe that he got an endorsement in the last month or so. As a newbie myself this makes me even more determined to concentrate and co-ordinate.

How do you lose a stinson on takeoff??

Must not be that hard. A newb TW pilot balled up a Stenson at my little airport recently on TO......
Nothing notable about the wind conditions, either.

That is one way to learn, I guess...

Humor may not make the world go around, but it certainly cheers up the process... :)
With clothing, the opposite of NOMEX is polypro (polypropylene cloth and fleece).

if you do run out of stinsons, there is a ramp dog at caldwell (EUL) that hasn't flown in over 20 years, maybe someone should try to but it and put it back in the air.

Re: How not to put a plane in the hangar

I had as much trouble with takeoffs as landings during the first couple hours of flying taildraggers-- not anticipating the left swerve as the tail comes up, then chasing it instead of anticipating what it's gonna do. 15 years later, I'm starting to catch on....

:(

With the recent happenings, I am truly impressed with how stout the 108 series is. They seem to do a wonderful job protecting their precious cargo.

Re: How not to put a plane in the hangar

My recent experience has been that OVER control is as bad as failure to anticipate the left turn on raising the tail. With the Luscombe you really need to get that tail WAY up there in the slipstream. I do prefer the three point takeoff but it's not a good idea in any wind at all. My heart goes out to the guy. Stick to 200 foot ride runways until you get accustomed to the tailwheel. He's feeling pretty stupid about now.

Please do not post any more photos or videos of Stinson mishaps- at least for a while. I don't think I can take any more...

Thank you.

It's actually fairly easy under the right conditions, I had a friend who took off into a swirling wind that lifted one wing up and got under it. The controls went completely soft and nothing he did would get the wing to set down again. The plane was at a full stop for several seconds before the wind let the wing drop back down and the main wheel to touch the ground again. Total damage was a wing tip light and a couple of rivet heads plus a patch torn out of the seat bottom.
