If this is only the second (??), I was there for the first closing...January 2nd, 1996...I think. I was stuck in Boise after attending a wedding, all my gear (and passport) was in McCall, and I had a flight out of the country in four days, and wouldn't be back for eight months. Mud slides had the road closed in a dozen places between Horseshoe Bend and Cascade.
I don't remember my exact route back to McCall, but I remember it involving chains on all four tires of my Toyota 4x4, about 22 hours, and a lot of luck.
Weather in Montana is sweet...cold and snow flurries...nothing to worry about.














A little fat ebike ride before heading up to the area starts most of my days. Not much crane work in these winds either.
