93K,
Dr. Huddleston at Stanford gave me a new left hip. 40 days later, he said I was good to go. Only took some pain pills the first week. I found rehabilitation exercises for the hip not a big deal: kind of fun, in that, one day you can barely do it and the next, it is manageable. If you can manage without hip surgery, by all means, do so, it is major trauma to the body. If you can't manage (your wife doesn't walk alongside Igor), schedule some downtime and get it over with.
Good luck to your firend, glad I did it.
