Icy Bay Waterfalls--video

My best friend, Mike Danaher, and I landed at the base of the Guyot Glacier in Icy Bay, Alaska, early this September to view these waterfalls. The amount of melt water draining from the Guyot Glacier is breathtaking. Up close, the sound is deafening. The main waterfall drops about 400’ into the bay.

Landing there is understatedly interesting! While not particularly short—it’s maybe 300’ long—the approach/departure over the abrupt cliff had our full attention! The strip itself is pretty rough; two pronounced ruts and a decidedly uphill orientation add a challenging dimension.

Definitely one of the most magical, stunning, amazing—adjectives escape me—places that Mike and I have ever visited.

Truly blessed!

I was up in SE Alaska for the summer, flying Part 135 charter and backcountry. I'm working on a full trip report for Backcountry Pilot in the near future!

About 1 min long. Link:

So cool!

I think 300' would have most of us shitting our pants, and those consequences are

Ted has authored some great trip reports over the last few years:

I'm just trying to figure out how long it took you to get your butt muscles unclenched enough to get out of the airplane to take the images......

Good work, and great video and pictures, and thanks for sharing.

Ted,

Do you have any video of the landing? It looks interesting for sure.

Re: Icy Bay Waterfalls--video

I don't have video of the landing or takeoff. Landing was literally a last minute decision as we had campled the previous night elsewhere (Taan Fjord) in Icy Bay. We were headed to Yakutat then Skagway then Watson Lake and wanted to keep going...but now wish we had spent the night by the waterfalls.

Next year I hope to be back. For sure, I'll shoot video then!
