Idaho BC recommended strips?

Going to Idaho early June, what are the recommended fun strips to go to?
Doable on a 182 (thinking about the take off).
As recommended will have an instructor Leigh Smith from Techflying.

My recommendation? All of them! :D Of course Johnson Creek is the best place to set up a base camp. Wake up in the morning, look at the map and decide where to go. I don't think you would have a problem at any of them with your 182. I've been to nearly all of them in my 170 except Simmonds.

Do you plan on activities other than flying? There is a lot to do out there in the Frank and it's surroundings. Moose Creek is an absolute favorite of mine. Soldier bar is super sweet as well. Sulphur Creek for breakfast is always a nice stop. Taking a soak in the springs at Lower Loon is a pretty decent way to ring in the day.

Re: Idaho BC recommended strips?

Very little off limits with good technique in Idaho. Sure...there are the cub only strips (handful), but the vast majority are 170/172/180/182 friendly.

Like the guys said...JC as a base camp and then the world is your oyster. I'm headed that way the 2nd week of june, looking to bounce around myself. I'm a big fan of JC ofcourse but I really like hiking around Thomas Creek. I've never been, but I was going to try camping at moose creek if JC gets too busy.

Big Creek - great scenery and lots of roads that are Mtn Bike worthy. :D

I like West Fork lodge too. 4U7 Let me know when you are headed over. If the wx is real nice I'll try to pop on over. I'll be over for Super Cub 16-19 of June too.

Cheers...Rob

The West Fork Lodge is a great stop! Nice place to stay overnight and have a really good dinner. Visiting with Tex is always a pleasure. Fuel is reasonably priced as well. It's a short hop to the Selway strips from there.

Hey Dave. I'll try to get over to meet you. I've followed your post since you joined up here and we have never met.

PS. I'm keeping my 8.50s on for now because it looks like I might make 3 trips to JC next month. I like 150 mph

Weather permitting, flying up from Houston on the 10th. Staying the night in Afton...then on to 3U2. I should be there all week until the Bushwheel fly in starts. Hopefully cross paths.

Re: Idaho BC recommended strips?

You can't go wrong with Leigh Smith. He knows energy management forwards and backwards.

It would be great if you could meet up with the Flying Hawkes also. I know they teamed up together a few years ago, launched out of Hamilton, Mt, and made some pretty sweet videos!

He's pretty elusive these days but I know how he loves going to "Church". Pretty impressive what he has done with his stock 182 in the River of No Return Wilderness. He says there's "More To Do", but I think the "Cub Only" list is complete.

I thoroughly enjoyed Patrick Romano' s recent STOL Tips: Tricycle Gear Aircraft article. He nailed that one, and as a Flying Hawkes wannabe would say, "We have the proof" Just don't forget flaps :) A takeoff prayer does wonders also!

It would be great if you could get a hold of a copy of Bound For The Backcountry - Richard Holm and read up on the places you intend to go. It's amazing to shut your airplane down after landing a remote strip, get out and feel the history of those pioneers who lived and loved or operated out of them in years gone by. Truly an incredible experience. Makes me want to get my 1960 182C finished...
