Just got back this morning from a 4 day Idaho spring bear hunt in the selway/bitteroot wilderness. Trip synopsis: 14 hours flying, 182 gallons burned, 2500 pounds of hunters and gear transferred, 2 bears bagged (one got away), and a lot of backcountry flying = one great extended weekend!
Bear camp was set up at Shearer airstrip on the Selway river. It took three trips in from Hamilton, Montana to ferry four hunters and a TON (literally) of gear into shearer. The weather was beautiful until the clouds and rain rolled in on Sunday. I flew 9 straight hours Sunday and was lucky enough to get all of the hunters out despite the low clouds and constant rain.... flying AK style. (i.e. following the rivers downstream). By the end of the day sunday I had flown the entire length of the Selway, lockshaw, and salmon rivers and flew the entire length of the snake river from lewiston through hells canyon to Boise. Can't wait for next year.
