Re: Idaho plane that crashed was dropping toilet paper

Must be quite popular, a few years back Tom King enterprises in Chino Ca lost one of their banner tow planes with a couple pilots aboard north of Baker Ca on the way back from Las Vegas. Seems that they were throwing TP rolls out the window and chasing the tails to cut them up. Apparently it was so much fun they forgot to pull up #-o

10 years back or so I heard of this guy flying a Searay home build doing the same thing, he slipped down chasing the roll and it got caught in the external aileron push pull tube and jammed the controls limiting roll control. Luckily he managed to land it safely.

Looks like fun to me, and not any dumber than a lot of the stuff many of us do in our planes.

I hate losing pilots, no matter what the circumstances. Condolences to the family.

No dumber than hammerhead turns out of a box canyon, hydroplaning tires while weaving down a river, getting an overloaded floatplane off the water before you get to the log boom that is sheltering the really big waves....etc. Actually looks like a lot of fun and is pretty common among the aerobatic/airshow crowd, but like anythiing else you start with the right aircraft for the job, start at a safe altitude, know when to fold 'em before you get that "ground rush".

Re: Idaho plane that crashed was dropping toilet paper

I did it a few times when I was both a student pilot and a teenager in a J-3 Cub back in the '60s.....
It is actually harder than it looks to turn, and find it again, and again, and again, and again......
breaking it into as many small pieces as possible. I/we did our best to hit it with the wing and not get it into the motor to possibly start a fire. (Cubs look mighty necked-and don't fly well without their fabric)
There was kind of a competition among us student pilots to see how many pieces we could cut it into before it hit the ground. Either I wasn't very good compared to them-or they were better liars....
We had to do it well out away from the airport where there were no witnesses.

Ya, kinda stupid in retrospect....
lc

We had LA haze in the PHX area most of the time back in the '60s that the TP would tend to blend in with......
That clean air and green background (ground cover) makes it look easy in the video.... 8)

Humor may not make the world go around, but it certainly cheers up the process... :)
With clothing, the opposite of NOMEX is polypro (polypropylene cloth and fleece).

Re: Idaho plane that crashed was dropping toilet paper

Nothing dumb, or wrong, about chasing TP with an airplane. Or busting balloons, or anything else fun with an airplane.

What is dumb, is killing yourself by flying a perfectly good airplane into the ground while doing it.
