Re: Iditarod

The Iditarod Air Force supports the dog teams along the trail. About 30 Alaskans flying their socks off hauling about anything you can imagine. More about what we do on the website www.dogflying.com

Re: Iditarod

Looks pretty exciting, that girl has been in the lead for a long time, others are catching with faster legs, but she is still in the lead, Hope she can keep up the lead to Nome,
Looks like the weather has been perfect for the dogs. Hardest part seems to be staying ahead on the last dash!!

Re: Iditarod

That's a race where anyone who completes it is a winner, IMHO. I had an acquaintance who ran it 20 times, placing in the top 10 3 times, but I really can't imagine the fortitude and strength it takes to do it.

Re: Iditarod

Hey George,
It has been busy for some time now.
Had the Paul Johnson memorial sled race a few weeks ago. Irondog after that. Nome-Golovin last weekend and now Iditarod. Just helped drag out the drop-bags for the mushers last night and set up the checkpoint.

I have to admit that as much as i love mushing, iditarod has lost a lot of it's appeal. It's very commercialized, can't get too close to the mushers or they might get penalized, and the "official" iditarod people can get pretty prima-donna-ish (sometimes bordering on extra douchbaggy). The Paul Johnson race is a lot more fun, got to hang out with the mushers, and extend the courtesy of helping out where needed. Dee Dee rolled herself and her sled into some overflow and came into White Mountain soaked, so we were able to get her dried out while my kids got to listen to her tell some of her trail stories. That would never be allowed during iditarod.

I'll try to post some pictures when the mushers start coming in.

Iceman,
I think the Alaska Dispatch (http://www.alaskadispatch.com/) does the best job of reporting the race, better insite than the official iditarod site.

My .02 cents

Aliy is a great kid, and tougher than nails, but that's some tough competition up front, and she was leading for a while. Aliy used to fly with me on moose surveys as an observer, and you couldn't ask for a better partner in the wilderness.

She won the Yukon Quest several years ago, and she has it in her to win the Iditarod as well, especially if the going gets really tough. Mostly these days, though, the Iditarod is a multi day stage race, unlike the Yukon Quest, which can be really brutal.

I wish them all luck, though....they are all a whole lot tougher than I have ever been.

Race should be ending within the hour =D> Years ago a friend flew an ultralight Anc to Nome with the dogs. The dogs beat him by a week

Re: Iditarod

Don,

Nope, Aliy is no relation to Gene.

Looks like Dallas Seavey won.....Aliy was next an hour later into Nome.
