Im picking up my PPONK'D 182!!!

On thursday im flying up to MMV to pick up my C182P that has the full PPONK treatment done to it...Graham up at NW air repair is doing the break-in for me which is very comforting! Its taken a little longer than i anticipated for this to be completed, but im sure this thing will rock my socks off when i go up and snag her!!

I will post some pics of the engine, and install as Graham is emailing me a bunch of pictures from the installation!!

Yeah........ About that

Long story short. I'm hoping to start on it as early as this fall/winter. If not, next spring/summer. As of right now, the Skylane is stored in my hangar and I don't even go visit it much anymore :(

Sorry, you all will have to put up with my bench flying a little longer. :D

Re: Im picking up my PPONK'D 182!!!

So what is the story with that 58' ? I've heard you say there are a couple bad cylinders.....did they scatter parts, or just low compression? What's the engine time? Cylinders can be off, fixed and back on in a couple days.

I was doing my annual this last spring on the 63' skylane....just before a planned Baja trip. Unknown until compression checks....#3 cylinder was pretty much dead. Had it off in a couple hours, dropped off at Gil's Engines, here on the Stead Field. Turned out to be bad exhaust valve & guide. Had it ready for me the next day....put back in place that evening. Test ran the following morning, cowled up and broke it in. Off to Baja a day after that.
Cylinders bolt on and off for that reason.

I think he's got a bad cam discovered when they pulled the cylinders, but Pat can tell the story.

Terry that is sweet!!

I cant wait to see that plane again, hopefully i remember how to make it fly!! Did you happen to see my fuzzy dice hanging from the compass??

By the way i think skylane 882 may have found its new mechanic...graham is by far one of the most thourough people ive ever met...regardless of the 4hr flight to get there!!

Re: Im picking up my PPONK'D 182!!!

Hey Mike, I don't mean to walk all over your thread. Sorry in advance.

But real quick..........

Just like a lot of us, ran into money issues. To be very honest, ran up some debt when I ran out of cash  . Plus, my hours at work got tightened and the company put a stop to about all double time and all the overtime I wanted to work. So my cash flow has been really thin the last couple of years. And I've been stuck working down in our Cypress, CA office more than I care too (not much home time in Idaho  ) My priority's been making sure the mortgage, plane payment (second mortgage  ) hangar rent and insurance had been paid on time every month. All is good now.

I'm really hoping for a new part time trucking gig to start up this fall/winter to where I'll be home more and make some extra cash  If that happens and it goes well, I put the plane in the shop so Shaun Tubbs at Performance Air at Caldwell can start working on it.

Well, that's about it for now. If Zane wants to split this thread as to not clutter Mikes thread, that's fine with me. Again, sorry Mike.

I have the PPONK grin!!

Smoothest piece of flying machinery ive ever been around. The blended airfoil hartzell is phenomenal its smoother than a babies bottom...so far 4.7hr on engine...temps are very nice highest cyl temp 370 in climb, they are really starting to equalize now...it DRINKS the GAS when i want to haul the mail! I saw GS of 156kt coming out of KMMV at 3500' 24squared!!! Indicating in the yellow at anything above 23sqared.

Love love love love love it!!!!!

Highly reccomend NW Air Repair fantastic shop that has earned the major maint. on my rig!

Cheers guys!

If you are able to maintain 370 for CHT on full extended climb out you are doing better than me. I have and also love, love, love my PPonk 182 but I do need to keep a close eye on the CHT's on climb out. I try to target 380 but if I am not careful it will quickly creep over 400 and that is a no, no.

Re: Im picking up my PPONK'D 182!!!

I'm using my plane as a Jump ship, when the weather is hot usually between 11 and 3 o clock the CHT goes up to 420 , 430 degrees during climb out, but when the weather cools down a bit CHT doesn't exceed 400 .
During normal operation and cross country flights CHT is usually between 350 and 370.

Pull your carb heat on and watch those temps come down :!:

Re: Im picking up my PPONK'D 182!!!

Just a question on the carb heat maneuver, pulling carb heat on run up drops rpm about 200. Would backing 200-300 off full throttle in climb allow a similar drop in cht without pulling carb heat? Some POH books warn against pulling carb heat at full throttle.

Not on a constant speed prop, it will further enrichen the mixture therefore lower the EGT.
