improving your aerial scan over snow

I ran into Kathy S. in Inkom today, and she asked if that was me in that little green (close enough) plane over the ski area yesterday. When I replied in the affirmative (the ski area is behind my place, in my airspace as it were, and while I maintain a 500' separation from any man made structures and/or people, at the same time I take advantage of any ridge lift when clear of the ski area itself, then it's just a big mountain range and I'm a motor glider). She went on to ask "did you see us five ladies at the top of the South Bowl.... we all had our tops down"?

Now, these were not man made structures but naturally occurring ones, but as people were involved unfortunately I failed to spot the obstructions due to the 500' rule #-o I promised her the next time I would exhibit greatly increased situational awareness, while still of course staying compliant with the applicable FAA regulations. She, in turn, promised to continue, when appropiate of course, the visual aids needed to help keep my scan at a high state of awareness, as always, safety first

It's an old bush pilot and float pilot trick to use objects on the ground for increasing depth perception in challenging visual conditions. I think you were just taking advantage of the visual cues offered by your flying environment.

Hmmm...maintaining pilot composure and appropriate aircraft attitude while circling bare-chested ground reference(s). They should add that to the practical test standards.

They could call it "turn-ons around a point..." #-o

Re: improving your aerial scan over snow

When I had floats on the cub and would fly over the sand dunes and beaches during the summer, it wasn't rare for young gals to 'flash' me to try and get me to land on the water and come over and give them a ride.
Well, I figured if I stopped and they saw it was just 'some old man' the shows would stop, so I just stayed an appropriate distance up/away and waved and smiled a lot and let the games continue..... :)

Mebe I should 'float up' again this summer. HMmmmm. :)

I should add that the instigator of the other ladies (c'mon, let's flash courierguy") is a MENSA member, and really put together besides mentally.

But, so is a neighbor who was also at the local Inkom watering hole that afternoon. He was all proud of his newest smart phones GPS app, sure enough it showed his speed as 0.0, sitting on a barstool

LC, don't circle too slow over those monuments, we don't want/need to invent a new way to crash/burn.
FAA would have to invent a socially acceptable term for the "TIT stall".
