In one week I will be in Alaska working as an A&P.

Thanks for all the help and advice. I am heading off to King Salmon Alaska on Friday thanks to a lead from a fellow BCP'er.
My tools and gear are pretty much packed, loose ends just about tied up at home and in my hangar. This is going to be one hell of a summer. It will also be the first time I have been away from my wife and dogs for more than a few weeks at a time in 20 years (married young, I am only 41)
I hope to give an update at some point. I tend to take a lot of pictures too. Not sure on the internet situation there, and Verizon says no cell service. There may be a bit of withdrawl involved with that.

Good luck, it's hard. I just spent a year away from my family for a new job.
It's worth it now, but it was hard on all of us.
BTW I was also 41 when we did that.

Humor may not make the world go around, but it certainly cheers up the process... :)
With clothing, the opposite of NOMEX is polypro (polypropylene cloth and fleece).

David, not sure if you've seen my other post (http://www.backcountrypilot.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=10159), but if Alaska doesn't work out please keep us in mind, we have immediate openings in our rebuild shop.

WATCH OUT!!! The first time I went to Alaska to work I got stuck there! By that I mean I just couldn't live and work anywhere else after experiencing the Arctic. It's incredible. Good luck Cheechako! Be prepared to get razzed until after your first winter.

It has been a while since I have done a winter in Alaska, and I wont be doing it this year. I am hoping the have graduated from high school in Anchorage will elevate me beyond Cheechako status quicker than someone who has never experienced the dark season and all it brings with it.

I would be ok with not being a Cheechako for long since I left Anchorage in 1987, but if you say so, thanks. I never knew it was a Chinook word until just now when I researched it. Chee = New Chako = come together it is the same as sayin newcomer.

That's good to know. I thought it meant "dumb s**t". :D
