This is from a series called Worst Place to be a Pilot. There are four or five full episodes on YouTube. Looks like a GREAT place to be a pilot to me!!

Re: Indonesia steep strip

I had a former chief pilot who was a missionary pilot over there. He and his wife build their house by hand. His kids were born there (in the house). His first 10,000 hours were in 185s, then they got 208s before he decided to repatriate himself. That's dedication.

Re: Indonesia steep strip

As I recall, one of those Susi Air pilots posted some videos here on BCP a few years ago.
Sounded like most of the pilots were young Brits or Aussies, building time toward flying careers.
One post described a stop at a jungle strip where members of two different tribes (who had a feud or whatever going on) were waiting.
Pilot decided to head out when it looked like things might degenerate into a gang fight--
with spears instead of AK's.
Some of those tribes are or at least used to be headhunters and/or cannibals,
I guess you want to treat them with kid gloves.
Don't know about being the worst place to be a pilot,
but I'm sure it's one of the most interesting.
I do envy them getting to fly something as cool as a turbine Porter.
