$900 on $55000 hull value, 182C. Did pay $1800, same hull value on a 1954 180. Been pretty consistant.

$1900/yr. $1M Liability plus hull, first-time Skywagon owner/pilot. Required 2 hrs of CFI checkout. Have about 425 hrs tailwheel. Insurance premiums SUCK but not having it when you reaaaally need it would sucketh more so. Liability...as weak as $1M is...(barely paying the shyster  ) would hopefully keep the barbarians at the gate. Hull coverage=mighty nice for spendy parts after a prang, or bite the bullet and fix it on your own dime to save a big chunk of premium. Tough call with no right answer. On my previous airplane (RV8), I went full coverage for two years, then slid back to liability only. I could fix that airplane easily if need be, but not a greedy plaintiff.

Before I dropped the hull insurance and went just with Liability, the rate for a 1980 M5-180C was more than $5K! While I am not a high time pilot, I do have a reasonable amount of hours for a plain old mid-50's guy that has been flying for personal satisfaction for a couple of years.

Maules absolutely get hammered across the board due to their normal use and abuse. No allowances are made for flying in the east and the kind of flying that is done. Understand that I am not complaining. I knew the rules going in. You have to have a lot of time in a Maule before rates come down. The pool of planes flying is simply not large enough to make those types of rate discriminations.

What you pay is absolutely tied to your hours in type, nose or tailwheel, complexity, 2 seat or 4, hull value, and aircraft manufacturer plus other stuff I forgot.

Your pay grade and flying mission determine the tipping points in your decision about insurance at this moment in time.

Yup! :) Thought when I got the 182 the insurance would go down, and it did, about half. Then I could buy more fuel 8) , but then fuel prices went to heck, so I'm back in the same boat. So will sell the 182 and maybe go experimental, or a Cessna 140. I haven't filled al 4 seats in over a year anyway. 2 seats will be fine.

I pay about $1100/year for a Citabria, $40k hull. Avemco. Hangared.

It's pocket change compared to when I started my own flight school and rented out a C172 and a Cardinal RG. Try $1100/month...

1972 Citabria 7GCBC $40,000 hull 100,000PP/1 mill liability - $900/yr
I actually had 1mil smooth the 2nd and 3rd year for about $1,200.
When it went on floats, cost jumped to $3200 as I didn't have any float time. Not sure what it would be for the next go with 70 hours.

1974 Cessna 180 $130,000 hull (6 passenger seating) 100,000PP/1 mil liability - $2,300 (I had 5 hours Skywagon, 750 TW and 1,400 TT Commerical, instrument and Seaplane ratings.
Since this is my second policy with the same company, I was able to add as an additional policy. This helped because the Citabria coverage started in April. I just paid $1,150 for the first 6 months and hopefully will see a drop in cost when I have more skywagon hours in 6 months. I looked into insuring for 4 passengers, but late model skywagons are all listed as 6 pass through my insurer. I do have friends with a 206 who insured it only for 4 pass for many years?

The 1959 182 $60,000 hull 100,000PP/1mil liability was $920/year.

I'm one of *those* people

1946 Luscombe 8E. 300 Total Time, 100 T/W, tied down outside, $1mil Liability, Ground not-in-motion hull value $12k. $507/year. AUA.

If I break it, my own damn fault, but I'm terrified of the idiots nearby who forgot how to tie an airplane down, and have seemingly forgot that they own one, or that it does get windy here from time to time. I might upgrade the hull value to $20k for an extra $120 a year.

As with Whee, I wouldn't have been covered until I had 15 hours. Good thing the flight home from purchasing it in Montana took 16.

Hey Matt, is your Citabria covered when it's on skis?

insurance costs

I would say to Skystrider that he ought to be having a serious talk with his agent about his cost and he ought to be shopping. My cost on $55K hull on a 73 Maule M-4 220C have been averaging about $2K per year, this year I finished my project a 69 Maule M-4 220C and have insured both, 1 pilot 2 plane coverage for $3K per year with the usual million in coverage. Pays to shop, I went with LAU this year. I thought my rates were bad! I have about 500 hrs 270 of that in T/W. Appears my rates are in the ballpark with most. After that story its no wonder a lot of people think that Maule rate are unreasonable, you need to shop insurance every year.

'96 MX7-180C. They wanted $2600 full coverage. I went with Liability only for $600 with AVEMCO. Figured that I would pick up hull coverage when I had 100 in type. They told me that I would get the lowest rate at that point. When I got to 100 I called and was told that the magic number is 200 in type if you own a Maule. Not what they told me when I bought the Maule. I'm guessing they will bump that to 300 next time I call. BTW I have 18400 TT. Insurance companies suck.

I think I'm paying around 1100 a year for my 140. When I started the plan I had 160 hours and 34 hours of tailwheel. Now i got 290 hours and 160 hours of tailwheel, so I bet I could get it to go down at renewal time.

Full coverage for $24,000 worth of airplane

B&Y Luscombe,
Yes, I specifically asked about skis, but there was no change in coverage. More important, I am covered whether landing on or off airport. This is one of the things that has kept me with AIG, as well as there is no increased cost if I fly in Alaska. (I hear that if my address was Alaska I would pay double whatever I was currently paying in the lower 48) Always need to read the policy carefully. The only gotcha that I need to be cautious of is that I'm not covered for aerial photography. As far as an out for the insurance co. that would be easy if your passenger told the FAA, "yeah, we were trying to get a better shot of _______ when we clipped that power line". Fill in your own story, but if I was the insurer, I wouldn't have a problem saying "per your policy agreement, you're not covered for this". While you're spending time grumbling about the cost, spend some time and READ YOUR POLICY.
