Insurance

Having trouble getting insurance on my S-7LS due to a recent claim. I figure my only choice is to get an umbrella policy to cover liability issues and not have hull insurance. Any ideas? And,oh yeah,be more careful.

Re: Insurance

Umbrella policies specifically exclude aviation risks.

Re: Insurance

Is it the norm to be rejected for insurance coverage for having filed a claim?

Lynn Sanderson (Dirtstrip) passed away from natural causes in May 2013. He was a great contributor and will be missed dearly.

Re: Insurance

Not necessarily, but it depends on the nature of the loss combined with the normal underwriting items like pilot, aircraft, use, etc.

Re: Insurance

Check with Avemco as well as an agent that has access to all the markets that write the S-7. The "other" companies will typically give a courtesy "pass" to allow the one that paid the claim to recover some of their loss. IF the previous company does not want to quote the new aircraft the others may then release a quote. Your agent should know / be able to take care of it for you. Again, it all depends on the nature of the loss, pilot history, aircraft, etc.

***THREAD HIJACK***

Speaking of insurance. I got a nice surprise when I renewed my Maule policy October 1st It dropped for the 5th straight year, 2010 $2400 to $1869 for 2011 deductible went from $2500 down to $300 SWEET!!! I guess the IFR and over 1100 hours did help. Oh no claims either. $115,000 Hull

Re: Insurance

I've only had liability on my RV-4, but the plane cost me just under 20k to build (completed in 1988), so I have come out way ahead over the years...

My Rans S-7S on the other hand, cost me three times as much to build when I completed it in late 2010. Decided to get full coverage on the plane 5 days before a planned week long trip to the Bahamas with my wife just after Sun-n-Fun this year. I wasn't quite sure what to expect taking the plane out of the country, so didn't want to take any chances...

Well, the plane decided to total itself via the little tornado that visited SNF. Sure was lucky to have that insurance binder letter...even though I hadn't even paid the premium yet...

My insurance was thru Nationair, underwritten by Chartis. Can't say enough about the near perfect service by both companies after the loss.

I bought the salvage from Chartis for a very reasonable price (fuse was easily repairable and the Rotax 912 ULS was unscathed. Everything else was trashed)

Just got the plane back in the air last weekend thanks to the great work by the Rans factory who offered to rebuild the plane...

Called Nationair to (hopefully) reinstate coverage, and low and behold Chartis was again the lowest cost underwriter...and the premium actually went down over $100 per year for the identical coverage! Who'd have thunk?

Re: Insurance

Magnet;
I had a similar situation with the insurance carrier on my boat. On my first solo cruise I got tangled up in the bowsprit of a big expensive sailboat. The damages came to $14000 more or less. That was 6 years ago. I was advised by my insurance broker to hang with the same underwriter in spite of the 2/3s increase in premium. Apparently if you let them get some of their money back, the industry as a whole will view you as a better risk. I honestly can't say if it's true or not, but I'm wondering if you have the option of staying with your wounded underwriter for awhile until the dust settles?

Just a thought

Re: Insurance

Don't think they want my business. Avemco says two years without a claim and they will insure me. Obviously without insurance I would not have a claim within two years.
