interesting C170 mod

Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

interesting C170 mod

I saw an interesting C170B on the ramp at Arlington WA the other day.
Parked in the homeboy area of the ramp, but Id never seen it before so I walked over to check it out.
First thing I noticed was a c/s prop, but no cowl blisters like you usually see with a Lyc 360 conversion.
Got a little closer & was surprised to see that it had a geared Lycoming engine, with a
long nose case and some oil lines plus some sort of control linkage & lever-- apparently for the constant-speed and/or otherwise controllable prop.

I've seen lots of airplanes originally fitted with or modified with GO Lycomings (Fockewolf P149, Navion, Seabee, Widgeon, Helio), but never a 170 or any other 100-series Cessna. I have seen Stinson 108's fitted with a non-geared O-435 off an L5, but at only 195 hp I hear from people who've run them that they're a bit of a boat anchor.

I googled up the tailnumber, N433W, and the FAA data said it had a Lyc 435 series engine (not a GO-435), but don't know if it was an STC or a one-off field approval. Googled some more, and discovered that some 435's were not designated as GO's but nevertheless were geared engines. I'm thinking maybe it was an O-435-23: 255hp at 3400 rpm. Dunno what it weighs, but that's lotsa snort for a 170!

Re: interesting C170 mod

The C175 came with a GO-300 Continental, not a GO-435 Lycoming.
And no, I didn't get any pics, but if it's still there I'll get some the next time I'm over that way.
