Interesting Places to Land in the Sierra/Owens/Central NV

Dad is coming out this week and was looking for some new / interesting places to land look around in the Sierra / Owens Valley / Central NV. Not HOT is good! :)

I have done some searching on the Forum and will continue to look some more.

Have a 160 HP SuperCub on 8:50-6 tires and know how to fly it.

Any current data on Coyote Flats? Mt Barcroft? Manzanar?

I have taken him to CinderCone Dry Lake, El Mirage, Kernville, Kelso Valley.

I am based in Tehachapi, CA

Many Thanks, Mark

Mark- You need some big tires! More places than one could imagine in those parts. It is a no fly place however once it gets hot (as you mention)...and the winds can come out of nowhere. Lots of folks on here that fly that area. Beautiful country.

Re: Interesting Places to Land in the Sierra/Owens/Central N

I fly here A LOT but almost all in my AS-W20 sailplane. Like 760 km Out and Return to Luning from TEH last Saturday. Longest flight last year was ELY - TEH - about 500 miles dog-leg via Eureka and Boundary Peak.

Comparatively speaking, droning X-C in powered aircraft is as challenging and interesting as watching TV.

Specific suggestions would be useful. I have a week to get Dad out in the boonies and am trying to streamline the process.

Kilo-dollars for Bushwheels is economically unfeasible at the moment.

Shoot Mark why don't you just borrow Jim Payne's DG1001 and run him up and down the Sierras and Whites like you did last week end :D http://www.onlinecontest.org/olc-2.0/gl ... Id=2581548

You'll be close to the Chicken Strip and Panamint Springs... I imagine it's pretty damn hot this time of year though.

Chicken and Panamint both amazingly hot at the moment. Want higher and cooler spots like Coyote Flats, the Whites/Inyo's and higher NV.

And Real Glider Pilots fly Sailplanes sans the gasoline powered courage 8) . That 500 km sortie on the Sierra was an embarrassing form of "Pole Sitting"......

The DG1001M is a loaner from Dennis Tito. Jim left the ASH-25 in the hanger - along with the C-182, RV-6, an AS-W27... I am jealous :)

Re: Interesting Places to Land in the Sierra/Owens/Central N

Your looking to go higher and find new places but (no disrespect) you have little tires. More places than one can think of in the Whites and NV but man oh man...not certain I would send you there with 600's.

I posted a pic of a landing at 13,5 down south with a lot of other options around it as well. Still would not think about it with the smaller tires. Had 15-20 of these guys on here in the south circuit we have, most landings were 8000' and higher. I think most would attest that the places are really great, but again (I am now a broken record) you have little tires. As you know, its just not worth it if you stub a toe. Would love to help. Not certain I would even land at Coyote Flats with 600's....maybe... #-o

We have a bunch of options for you around here on our North circuit. Most landings are between 5500-7000 and fairly smooth.

Good luck

I am dyslexic I guess...my bad #-o
In that case get to Bishop and head east. Start climbing and looking. More places than one could imagine.

Before BW's they carried a lot of extra gear and did a whole lot of fly bys. Every book you read about it, they were always fixing tires and gear legs. Tough pilots for certain. Thanks for the ingenious idea Wup!!
I know my 850's are not even close to my BW's but a great tire for certain.

If you land at 14k plus down there we better see photos!

Heck, my plane will be ready next week. I will come meet you

I've never landed at Coyote Flats but there is pictures of a Maule there with 8.50s I think (desert rat??) so it would probably be fine.
