Hello,

I just recently completed my checkride and now I'm a licenced pilot. I logged a small amount of tailwheel time during my instruction with the intention of finishing my tw endorsement as soon as I completed my checkride.

Well that isn't going to happen now since someone ground looped and totalled the Sportcub at my local airfield so now I don't have access to a plane to complete my endorsement training.

Im hoping someone in the PNW (im in the Portland area) can point me in the direction of someone that offers a tailwheel for rent and offers instruction. (preferably with knowledge of off airport operations). I'm going to talk to the guys at TACAERO in Hood River but I want to make sure I check out all my options.

I will travel for the right instructor.

Talk to Brian Lansburgh in Sisters. He trains in a C140, and is a master at teaching stick and rudder skills.

I highly recommend Lee Borchers with Pacific NW Aviation (http://pacificnwaviation.com/) in Independence, OR. I did my transition training in my 180 with him and found him to be a terrific and patient instructor. He has vast flying experience and endless stories to tell, which is a real intangible benefit when picking an instructor. For years he flew corporate with Evergreen, has many thousands of hours of tailwheel instruction, and flew many check rides as an FAA DPE. He volunteers with the WAAAM in Hood River and has flown almost every plane they have in the museum. If you fly with him, ask him to take you through the museum. You'll see more, meet more people, and learn more than you ever could just walking through on your own. Anyway, Lee is great!

Ha! I loved that bird as my own, put well over a hundred hours on it over the last few years. It was ridden hard though, by tailwheel students far and wide, and each year it had a few more patches and scrapes. It was on its 5th engine if I recall, each the result of a nose-over with a student too hard on the brakes. It even suffered a cracked forward door frame tube last year which Bob replaced by welding in an entirely new section of tubing.

She was a good machine, a wonderful flying little bird, until somebody ground looped and flipped her on her back. That's all I know. Wasn't me.

If anyone wants to rent me their taildragger locally, I promise to treat it nicely. I also carry $125K hull in renter's insurance, as I occasionally get to borrow something nice...

Good on you! Sure helps save friendships/relationships.Rental coverage is nice side benefit to having hull on plane I purchased this year.

I don't know if most owners realize this benefit or not, I sure didn't. I found out when I called my agent as asked about flying a friends plane and how much it would cost for insurance. The policy I had at the time covered me to fly any SEL without any checkout for twice the hull value I had my plane insured for.

Wow, that's pretty cool. Do you remember who offered that policy? Seems like a stretch to believe your insurance company would cover you for 2x hull coverage on non-owned.

I carry non-owned because even if the owner's insurance covered other pilots under an open-pilot policy, you can be the target of a subrogation claim by any other insurance company that's party to the accident. Plus there's just not enough money or assets in the coffers to cover some of these newer airplanes these days... gawd. $$$$$$

Z, I'm pretty sure it was Global. Heather at Regal was my agent.

Avemco coverage for me includes non-owned insurance equivalent to my owned aircraft policy. That is standard for Avemco for all single owner policies.

I had renter's insurance with Avemco but stopped the policy when I bout my plane. It was a good policy, if I was renting or borrowing these days I wouldn't hesitate to open another with them.

Jeff at Lattitude Aviation at Coeur d'Alene, ID (http://flylatitudeaviation.com/about/contact/) has a C170 for rent solo and instruction. See the image on his website. He also does back country checkouts and training using the nearby Idaho backcountry airstrips. I've not flown with him, but have heard some good words about his operation.

No Backcountry but tailwheel you can call Dave Aldred out of Scappoose. He trains primary in a Pacer! Just booked a ways out. I'm privileged to get to fly with him! Great guy.
