Re: Its ski season!!

Z,
when Mark loaded  that photo onto his laptop I was amazed as it looked just like one of the Naturalist school paintings from the late1800s. He shot it with a Sony DHC-89 from the back seat of the Batplane through a rose tinted side window. He ran the photo through an auto adjust filter which brought the contrast up a fair amount and leveled the lake in the background. I actually preferred the original.

It was really an amazing day to be flying. I was not real familure with the two passes we needed to cross to get to the Goldenhorn lodge so I took them with some altitude to spare; I normally do not fly that high!

Re: Its ski season!!

Its been terrible Evan! Either snowing and windy, raining and windy, or just plain windy! Not to mention how deep the smow is its making it hard to get to my strip. Working on that though.
Seriously, the weather goes from -30 and snow to 4 and rain from one to day to the next. Its been brutal up in northern Alberta.

Ya the weather has been really variable here too but not quite as extreme. ;-) I think I could get used to the cold that you guys experience up there.

We are trying to construct miles of pipelines here in southeast ohio right now. The weather has made it a constant slop hole. Freeze....thaw.....freeze....thaw. Shit. Just pic one.

What kind of skis are those? Look like they have telemark bindings but they're a lot fatter than I remember.

You ain't nothin' but a hound dog. This is a fun vid of a 701 hitting the slopes. I just get a kick out of the way these little guys go sideways everywhere they go:

They are Rossignol BC 125 skis. Set up with a set of Black Diamond O-1 bindings. The BC series of skis are set up with a waxless, fishscale base for about the middle 2/3 length of the ski, but keep some sidecut and the metal edges(like Karhu Guide and 10th Mtn models - now Madshus Epoch...). They are wider than the old standard mountain approach skis.

I used to tour around in ice climbing / mountain boots with Silvretta 505 bindings, but I missed the tele turns, and I like not having to use skins when climbing hills; these make it easy to do that.

So far, I like. And, they are working well as ski area skis while I teach my 2 and 4 year old boys how to ski.

Re: Its ski season!!

Warm air has made the snow settle to a point that's only knee deep and hard enough to keep the plane on top. Cool thick air, the old girl climbed like a homesick angel. Wife took some pics of the the taxi to the front lawn and a couple flying pics.

Looking good. Interior needs some of that stuff! My plane is on skis perched atop little pedestals of snow I swept together. I couldn't taxi ahead five feet right now without running out of snow. :-(

Re: Its ski season!!

I took my 29" Airstreaks off before starting my panel redo, it sure made it easier (still a back breaker though) leaning in the cockpit. I had the axles sitting on blocks, so as low as possible. Tomorrow the 6:00 hockey pucks go on, along with the axle stubs for the electric Datum wheel skis. If possible I want to make a flight or two with the little tires before putting the skis on, just to see what a (comparative) hot rod it is then!

All our snow melted off, except for 7 K and higher, we had a fair bit but it was just a teaser, the next time will be the real deal, and I'll be ready 8) All I have left on my new panel is labeling, in particular the double throw switches that selects SKIS or WHEELS. I should have enough room to put several exclamation points in after SKIS, that will get a few laughs in the warm months
