JC 2009 Part II

Hey everyone,

We launched around 0930 this morning (a little later than we wanted) for JC and got here about 1200. Calm winds with just a few bumps over the ridgelines. We'll be staying here for at least one night...maybe two. After all the rain they got last weekend, it is gorgeous. Paul said is supposed to be upper 70's and upper 40's tonight. Only 4 aircraft on field. I guess they only had about 35 aircraft last weekend for the 180/185 fly-in/harmonica festival. So there is still plenty of fire wood to be had.

When we left OGD, I saw the Forest Service's Doug taxiing in. A friend of mine was flying it and I let him know that we were heading north. He said that he was too. We made plans to meet up on 123.45 and about the time I hit the Burley area, he made contact with me. What occurred next was something I will remember for the rest of my life and one of the coolest opportunities. By about the time we reached the Timberman Hills, he had a visual on me and joined up on my right wing. About the best we could do was a 10 knot difference, but it made for a great photo op.

A good day of flying. I'll try to get some pics up soon. It might not happen until I get home.

Is Shortfielder still there? Looks like that can be his 180 to the south of your plane. He was staying in one of the bunk houses when I was there this last Sat. & Sun.

Good question. Be right back.....Nope, not him. He must have already bugged out. Only 3 other aircraft here tonight.

Whee, If I remember right, you are a kayaker aren't you? Have you ever figured out how to haul your boat with the airplane?? And, if you do, can you set up shuttle points at both ends with airstrips?? John

Well I figured I could just strap it on to the bottom like a belly pod and I'd be in good shape :D I was trying to figure out if I could fit it into a 182 or a 206 but I haven't measured them myself yet. There is a few runs in Idaho that have a strip on each end. The one I really want to do is Loon creek; put-in at upper loon take out at lower loon. South fork of the Salmon would also work but it would take carrying the boats a little. There is a few others but the best one is Loon.

I was thinking about a 207 this morning. could a 207 with two boats and three people make it out of lower loon?

Re: JC 2009 Part II

Whee, I had my mirage up under a scout once, but never actually flew with it. Those "lumber racks" that Alaskan's put under their cubs would work easily (like yakama bars). I have a buddy with a L19, and they have those hard points under the wings. I always thought of those as bicycle and boat carriers too.

Re: JC 2009 Part II

hi whee, good to hear from you. a 207T would do it all right, best to make a couple of trips though...about 850' usable in there...kayaking loon would be a total gas, i am sure. ck the middle sections though as there are a few way dangerous spots worth walking around...take your stuff and camp a night at the old falconberry ranch...!

Re: JC 2009 Part II

A 207 will work when you DO NOT have to climb over an obstacle. They get off the ground fairly quick, but climb out is poor. Throw in some density altitude and I fear you would be in real trouble and may send some business over James' way. :D

The fellow I got my 206 from carried 2 kayaks. I think they were those short ones, not sure what you call them.

Re: JC 2009 Part II

I'll have to take a look inside a 206. Ideally I would be able to carry two boats and three people...need a shuttle drive to take the plane to the bottom. The boat I would want to take down Loon is ~8.5ft long. I'd take a shorter boat down big creek and the south fork of the salmon; ~7.5 ft.

Aire came our with a raft that could be fun...I usually only raft when I have to.

One other option is a folding kayak: http://www.feathercraft.com/kayaks/trad ... /index.php

I have a Klondike I take with me in my M5.

Trust me, that ain't what I paid for it.

There is a rental company here is Seattle that clears their inventory either every 12 or 24 months. I got mine at an end of season close out in Victoria.

Re: JC 2009 Part II

Finally I'm getting some pics on here. We decided a few weeks ago to get one more trip up north in before my wife (6 months pregnant) wouldn't want to camp any more. The weather was perfect with just a little haze from some of the few fires that had been going on. We left Monday morning and went to Johnson Creek via Smiley Creek, Stanley, Bruce Meadows, and Landmark. When we were taxiing out, I saw that the Forest Service's Doug was taxiing in. Right after we became airborne, I heard them on frequency and asked if a friend of mine was flying. It ends up he was and I told him I was heading north. He responded that they too were headed north in about 30-45 minutes. He told me to be listening on 123.45 in about that time and he would call me.

By the time I was getting to the Walcott Lake area east of Burley, ID, I heard him come on frequency and ask for my position. We talked for a while and by the time we were approaching Carey, ID, he was 5 miles behind me at my altitude. He slowed to about 10 kts faster than my speed and slowly moved past my right wing. It sure was pretty seeing that beautiful aircraft like that. Once they were past me, the continued on to McCall and I turned to head over Galena Summit.

Arriving in JC, we found only a couple of aircraft on the ground. A barron from San Jose area landed just before us. We got our favorite camping/parking spot and, after getting some lunch and camp set up, we spent the rest of the day down on the beach by the bridge. Adam was more than content to throw rocks into the river. We ran into a fellow that we had met last year in Jackpot during a fuel stop and spent some time talking to him. A real nice guy.

At 8am the next morning, it was 43 degrees and kind of chilly. We had breakfast and headed over to Thomas Creek for the day. Arriving there, we met the volunteer caretaker, Bruce, as we were getting out of the plane. We were headed to the Sunflower Flat hotspring and, since we hadn't been there before, he made sure we knew where to go. It was an easy hike through some beautiful country. At the spring, there were already a bunch of rafters there making use of the hot water. In a while they were gone and we just hung out and let Adam throw more rocks into the river. After a few hours, we hiked back and waited out the afternoon winds down by the river. Bruce invited us into his cabin to cool off and to refresh our water supply. It was hot and much appreciated.

About 6:30pm the winds died down and we took off for JC. Got back, made dinner, and went for a walk. We had noticed a pretty 185 when we landed and thought it looked familiar. It belonged to a nice gentleman we met last summer and we spent a while at their camp talking to them. A few more planes had arrived and we met 2 couples from Afton, WY that invited me over to check out their grass strip. It was a great evening of just hanging out and meeting some good people.

The next morning we got up and flew over to Smiley Creek for breakfast. Then we headed south to Gooding for fuel ($3.69) and then headed home. It was a great couple of days...too short though. I'm so lucky to have a wife that loves to do this, even when 6 months pregnant. She is a real trooper. Can't wait for the next trip.

Anyway, here are some pics. Hope you enjoy.

Re: JC 2009 Part II

Cory,
Thanks for sharing your trip with us! By the way, love the new paint job on your plane! Won't recognize you as easily, though.
Kitty and I had the same experience at Thomas Creek. Waiting out those pulsing reversing unpredictable winds and the high temps. We also were invited to the ranger station to get out of the heat and fill our water containers. We really enjoyed the hot springs. Looks like you guys had a fantastic time on your last "before the baby is born" Idaho trip.

Re: JC 2009 Part II

Cory,

Looks like you're club finally got its other 182 up and running!! I talk to Gary over at Millionair SLC and he has kept me posted about the engine overhaul drama on that plane. So how does it fly with the new engine?? Gary prefers that particular (N20733) 182 over the other for some reason. He said they sold his favorite one?? We are going to have to hook up sometime at the Auger Inn and hear more about your adventures. Looks like a blast.

Re: JC 2009 Part II

Hey Mark,

No new paint, just a different ride for that trip. I'll probably get up one more time in September. Had a friend at Smiley Creek last week that heard the wolves howling all night. Guess Gordon, the caretaker, saw them near the strip that next morning.

9us,

I found out that my mother-in-law is making a pink blanket for our little girl due in November. She had no plans on putting airplanes on it like she did for our little boy until my father-in-law and sister-in-law talked her into it. So much for me indoctrinating the boy and leaving the girl to my wife. Hopefully they'll be smart enough to make big $$ in a non-aviation field and be able to afford some nice aviation toys. :D

Leemer,

Yeah, it was a six month, $35,000 pain, but she runs strong now and flies well. I did miss the STOL though. I just wish I had figured out how to turn the terrain warnings off earlier than the last day of the trip. Real pain in the butt. Yeah, we sold our '64 182 a few years ago. It was a strong running airplane, but some didn't like how she landed. Anyway, I'll take our newer CAP plane any day over either of them. We should hook up sometime. I ate a couple of times at the Auger Inn over the last few days. I'll try to remember to drop you a note when I know I'll be hanging at the airport.
