JetBlue Captain Freaks Out

Passengers onboard a JetBlue plane heading for Las Vegas on Tuesday tackled and restrained the plane’s captain after he was locked out of the cockpit by crew members. The captain screamed "they’re going to take us down" and ranted about al-Qaida and a possible bomb onboard, passengers said.

One of the flight attendants reportedly got on the intercom and asked passengers to restrain the man. Several followed the instructions and pinned the man until the plane landed, the report said.

JetBlue said that the captain of Flight 191, which was diverted to Texas on Tuesday morning, had a "medical situation" and that an off-duty captain traveling on the flight entered the cockpit before the landing "and took over the duties of the ill crewmember once on the ground" in Amarillo.

A spokeswoman from JetBlue said that the passengers will be reimbursed for the flight and receive a credit for twice the value of their ticket. The airline would not release the pilot’s name or medical history.

Re: JetBlue Captain Freaks Out

What's going on with these airline employes?
A flight attendant on American Airlines flight 2332, a loaded MD-80 out of Dallas for Chicago Friday morning, launched into an intense tirade that culminated in her being restrained and the aircraft returning to the gate. As the event unfolded, the flight attendant's agitation grew until she was being held down and screaming "Get outta the plane! Get outta the plane!" in a voice that has been described as demonic. Click here to listen.

One passenger said the flight attendant mentioned during the episode, "that she was bipolar and that she had not taken her medication" the Chicago Tribune reported. The attendant first spoke more calmly over the aircraft's public address system saying, "We are not taking off. We're having technical difficulties. We're heading back to the gate." Another attendant countered that claim and the situation's decorum quickly dissolved until the first flight attendant was being held down and screaming "Get outta the plane! Get outta the plane!" At least two passengers moved forward from the rear of the cabin to the front where the altercation was taking place to assist. The aircraft returned to the gate, personnel was swapped for a fresh crew and the flight to Chicago was then carried out, uneventfully. Two of the flight's original crew were taken to the hospital with injuries.

Re: JetBlue Captain Freaks Out

I was doing an unrelated to flying business deal with a 28 year ATP pilot a few weeks ago. He retired a few months before 911. I asked him if he was happy to have quit (or forced out) before the event. He immediately said hell yes, he'd probably be in a federal prison by now! He went on to state that the increased BS those that actually fly the airliners (us cattle know what it nightmare airline travel now is, we maybe forget we're not the only ones to suffer gross indignities, delays, and senseless BS), and after seeing this poor JetBlue pilot, I could somewhat sympathize.....it was probably the TSA that drove him across the bend!

What a great job that co-pilot did, also the passengers.

Re: JetBlue Captain Freaks Out

Seems to be a lot of diverted flights mid way through their routes lately.

My flight from Atlanta to Santa Ana was diverted to OKC about a week ago for a passenger that needed medical attention.

A week before that, one of my co-workers was on the same flight (different day) from ATL to SNA and had to divert to Albuquerque for medical reasons, too.

Now this one. :-k :-k

I think your on to something :-k

Hey Zane, you need to spend more time in airports. CNN has the contract and is played in almost every airport I go through :D .

It will be interesting to hear the details.

Haha...I blame <insert any inflammatory sky-is-falling news network> and an obvious weak psyche. It is rather disturbing, because we all like to think the captain is this infallible, cool-as-ice character, ready to handle birdsuck at the drop of a hat. Maybe someone slipped some peyote into his Starbucks.

I just hope that the FAA doesn't have a knee jerk reaction and I find myself on a couch every 6 months talking about how I feel and the relationship with my parents!

It's very sad that it will likely be the end of his ATP career, possibly his CPL or even his Private the way things seem to go n the FAA these days.

yeah it's a shame but in reality there's no way he can fly for the airlines again or for that matter any flying..they'll yank his ticket in a heartbeat....

It would be more sad if he snapped and took a bunch of people with him.

No, come one, let's give the poor mixed-up fellow another chance. What could happen?

Re: JetBlue Captain Freaks Out

Might have been an experiment gone wrong. Surely nobody would have an interest in researching what could and could not be done to make some non-suspicious fellow do bad things in an airplane.

Anyone remember Project MK Ultra ?

Anyone remember "The Manchurian Candidate"?

Anyone remember "Thunderball"?

Anyone remember "The Prisoner"?

Anyone here old enough to remember "Gaslight"?

Just saying, there's other possibilities than the obvious.
