Jim's driveway and 170

Or is it a 170B? Anyway, the rag wing version. I'm sure someone will clarify the matter for me! This is the one the guys at the Poky Vo-Tech aircraft school have re-assembled and buffed out after years of (dry) storage in one of the trailers shown in this pic:Image I landed recently on the nearest squiggle in the foreground. Owned for decades by ex Corsair pilot/aerial applicator Jim Wallace. Image His 2000 hrs combat time in the South Pacific were recently summed up in a local newspaper article as "he flew a Corsair with guns and rockets on it". Ha! Probably reported as such as he is not one to talk about what he did back then when asked, but over the 10 years I have know him every now and then something will slip out, like that 2000 hr #. He's 93 now....and the plan was/is for the bird to go back together, get him some airtime in it, and then sell it most likely. Right now it's at the Poky airport and is back in the air. Jim's way out of currency so he is limited to just getting a ride in it, which really sucks for him but better then nothing. He and I both really get a kick out of my landing at his place every now and then:D Image

Nice looking 170. That's a '48 "ragwing" 170, The B model wasn't till '53.

Re: Jim's driveway and 170

I thought you'd chime in Rob! You really illustrate what those birds can do..... great new avatar pic.

I think Jim said it was a '49.... I need to get some time in it, once the vo-tech instructors get their jollies in it. I reminded them that if it wasn't for me prodding Jim into getting it out of the trailer to the school, it'd still be sitting there! I was a little bummed I didn't get a call to watch the test flight, but hell I hate flying into Poky anyway, ( and there is no way I'm driving to an airport) no grass landings allowed and the cheese grater surface on the asphalt there, at least on the giant ramp, is the worst I've ever seen on the tires. Or I should say on the Herculiner as I keep my Airstreaks coated with the stuff.

Old Charley has had many owners in the last 60 years. "Oldtech" used to own my 170 back in the 1980's, Oldtech is also ccuries father.

That's a really cool picture!

And thanks for the clarification. I was just getting ready to PM Zane about his apparent escapades

It really is crazy how we become a part of the history of each one of these machines. I was taking off yesterday when a Centurion that I have some time in came in for T&G landings. I commented to the pilot that he has a nice airplane and somehow I felt like a little piece of me was flying circles with him.

Re: Jim's driveway and 170

I actually I found this sight way back then because I was looking at a maule and the owner told me there was pics on here. I was looking at them and found pics of Oscar Quebec Yankee (Charlie's Canadian handle) and thus got involved in this sight. Amazing what you can find on the interweb!!
