John Kounis Flys West

John Kounis, who owned and edited Pilot Getaways with his younger brother George, passed away yesterday.

John has been an incredible asset to backcountry aviation and aviation in general, with his magazine, offering reviews of places to fly to as well as safety articles, his work with the RAF and AOPA and in many many other ways too numerous to mention here.

John recently completed a ferry flight of a Cessna 185 from California to Indonesia, for which he prepared meticulously. I visited with him frequently during his planning for this flight, and it was great to see the level of planning he undertook for this trip. Everything John did was done meticulously, and with great attention to detail.

A tremendous loss to all of us, but a reminder to us all to follow John's example and live life to the fullest.

Re: John Kounis Flys West

I knew John fairly well and would love to know what happened? Plane crash?

Saw SJ post this morning as well but no idea what happened.

Big bummer for certain!

I understand that it was not a plane accident.
