If there is already a thread on this, scrap this post. When he first whacks the tree you can see the fabric creasing all the way back to the trailing edge. Impressive performance from a Husky though, I would never have tried a go-around from there in anything I fly.

I like the dog beating his master off the patio in the background. He knew what was coming. Smart dog.

Re: Johnson Creek Husky

I have never been to JC, but when I look at some of the videos of planes landing and taking off, it appears that the experience level of the pilots are all over the map.

Some are outstanding and others are just an accident waiting to happen.

When I look at the pictures of JC when there is not one parking place left, I often wonder who is parked in the safest position, free from possible ground loops, airstrip over-runs, etc.

Yep, same goes for all big fly in events, though. I go to OSH a few days prior to the start of the show......and THAT'S when the real show is.

But I agree, with tight parking somewhere like JC, you'd better hope everyone is insured......or at least has a video camera.

And, yes, Huskys have an awesome climb rate......thankfully in this case.

That's half the fun of going. It is like NASCAR in the old days. No catch fences. When the wreck is headed towards you, drop your beer and run like hell.

We don't want to see anyone die! let me be clear on that.

But if you are not ready for JC and insist on coming to the circus that JC is on the big weekends. We will be in our chairs with a cold beer and a video camera rolling.

You will be immortalized on the blooper reel.

How can you not land on 150'X3400' ?

Re: Johnson Creek Husky

So was this an actual go around?
Does anybody know first hand?

I went to Johnson creek several years back so my memory is a little fuzzy but....

The runway is pretty long why wait to the last second for a go around?
If he would have turned a little left isn't there a creek with lower terrain just out of the view of the photo?

Re: Johnson Creek Husky

Lots of discussion on this event here and on supercub.org if you search.

There is no lower terrain to the south.

The Husky is a very clean airframe, not nearly as draggy as a Super Cub. As a consequence, if the pilot carries a bit too much speed on short final, the airplane can float forever. I wasn't there, but I'm willing to bet that's what happened in this case.

It's an easy "problem" to address: fly your approaches with good speed discipline, and the Husky ill land right where you want it every time.

Re: Johnson Creek Husky

yup on the go round...quite a few try to take off south with the winds in their faces, only to find that at tree top level, it often changes direction, turning into a pretty good tailwind @ 200' agl....quite a mixing bowl for sure....and it dont matter how much power u r packing...empty 206 turbos cant pull it off...! someday i will post a few pics that may change ur mind on giving it a whirl....!

A lot lower to the left.
Dave landing to the North with a good head wind, over the river approach, side stepping the house and parking it on the numbers.
White House in upper right corner.

Re: Johnson Creek Husky

I've only landed to the North one time and it was years ago. only because the North end of the field had low hanging fog... if you do land downstream you should stay over the creek till you pass the house then sharp left and right to line up with the strip... you don't have to hit the numbers and you can still touch down at the caretakers cabin and still get stopped...unwritten rule about JC is don't fly over the house... and I wouldn't even think about taking off to the south... if winds are that strong from the South, stay on the ground....
