Jorgy (his “official” name is Holger Jorgenson) is indeed quite the character. He has done things in airplanes that most of us just marvel at. Get him in a room with any of the other old Wien pilots, and the stories start flowing, and those stories both amaze and amuse.
Some of my favorite “Jorgy tales” involved Wien pilots flying C-46 airplanes from Barrow to the Ice islands north of Russia during the Cold War. It took some remarkable skills and incredible fortitude to launch off on one of those missions.
Jorgy flew heavy airplanes including the 737 of Wien and later the C-130 of AIA. When he hit the “Magic age” for airline pilots, he moved back to flying charters in C-46s in AK.
As a young man, who grew up in the west coast of Alaska, he served in the Alaska Scouts.
Jorgy is truly a class act, and I miss those monthly meetings where Jorgy nearly always has a story or two that will enthrall his listeners.
