JPI EDM 700/711/800 ????

Looking for hard advice here. I am in the process of getting my O-470R engine rebuilt and want to put on a monitor when it goes back into the plane. So six cylinder, carb, gravity flow. I plan to replace my existing single 2 1/4" EGT with a EDM 700/711/800 ?? Not sure which way to go with so many options. Is the 800 worth the $$? Looking for experienced users to point me the right way. The 711 is a primary replacement but does the 800 meet that requirement as well. I would like to have the EDM replace my CHT and Oil temp as primary if possible for a reasonable cost.

Thx guys.

JPi 800 series

Inagy
If ya want to experience the 800 version give me a PM.
I can give ya test run in my 180hp 170.

That is if ya don't mind steppin down a notch.
I got the 800 primarily for the Fuel Flow option for the long runs from Reid Hillview (RHV) to McCall (MYL).
Another friend of mine put in the 800 in his 180, then went to Kansas and got something like an IO-550 stuck on it.

Reminds me of what my Pop used to say about my old beater trucks. He'd say "What ya' need to do is remove the radiator cap, pull that POS out, pull a decent truck back in and put the radiator cap on the new truck. Then replace the radiator cap as soon as possible... " ;-)

I have a lot of experience in a half dozen airplanes with the EDM 700 series gauges.

What are you trying to replace, first of all? CHT/EGT? Which of those is actually REQUIRED equipment in your airplane? If neither is required equipment on the equipment list, then you can use an instrument which isn't approved for primary information, if that matters.

In any case, the 700 series can be equipped with a fuel flow transducer, and this combination is just a great addition to any airplane. If you need primary information, then I'd opt for the 711, but not sure if the 800 would be preferable. I've no experience with the 800, but looking at the information on their web site, I don't see a lot of additional information that would be all that useful.

JPI guages have simply the best viewability of any of these types of instruments, in my opinion, and I wouldn't use anything else.

I've got a 700 with all the bells and whistles on my 172 and am very happy with it. We did replace the ring probe on the #1 cylinder with a bayonet probe.

I have an EDM700 in my 180(0470-K) gives you cht and egt.I have a shadin fuel flow so I feel I don"t need the more expensive ones.In my opinion these things are a must! The price tag is way less than than engine you are putting in and it is very easy to monitor your engine and how it is performing.Ran one in a 206 and 207 and 185 flying jumpers basically flooring the engine for all its worth.I dont think I could have done that without one comfortably...........There are many different choices.......look around............I like the basic 700

Thanks for the info. I actually already have the JPI stand alone 450 fuel flow and think it is a must. I am thinking I would like to have it separate from the 700/800 display so FF info is always in sight. Not sure if CHT is on my MEQ list but I will have to check. Looks like the only real advantage that the 800 would give is %HP and I am trying to figure out if it is worth an extra $1000. Does anyone really value real time %HP ?? Let me know, still deciding. Sometimes you don't know you need something till you learn about it and then you have to have it. Thats where I am at now. :)

Thx,

Les,

To me, % power displayed isnt' that necessary. Nice to know, perhaps, particularly when it comes to leaning specific engines which prohibit leaning above certain % powers (Continental IO 550 comes to mind). If you don't have one of those, probably not that big a deal.

I sure wouldn't spend the extra $$ in my case, at least.

Great gauge system, however.
