Just Aircraft "stretches" their STOL 2 1/2 Feet + 180HP

Not sure if this has been mentioned in the forums already but...

Seems Just Aircraft is putting a 180 HP UL engine into the STOL. Runs on autogas or avgas. They claim a 3000 feet per minute climb.

Already a popular kitplane among those with a yen for backcountry flying, the Just Aircraft SuperSTOL is getting a stretch— two and a half feet of extra fuselage that will allow installation of more powerful engines.

The SuperSTOL Stretch XL performed well in the first phase of flight testing, and the Walhalla, South Carolina, company plans to debut the new model at the Sun 'n Fun International Fly-In and Expo in Lakeland, Florida, April 21 through 26.

Contract test pilot Harrison Smith reported in a company news release that the 180-horsepower UL Power 520i engine (also new to the market) increased climb and cruise performance of the original SuperSTOL (the SuperSTOL Stretch XL will climb with that powerplant at 3,000 feet per minute, and cruise at 109 mph at 2,600 rpm).

“The additional length in the Stretch XL provides handling similar to a high horsepower Super Cub,” Smith said in the news release. “What’s really nice is that the UL Power 520 can burn [automotive gasoline] with up to 15 percent ethanol. The fact that the engine has six cylinders virtually eliminates vibration.”

The fuselage was extended by two feet aft, and six inches in the forward section, all in the name of accommodating heavier engines.

The UL 520 weighs 255 pounds, and the Stretch XL can handle a heavier powerplant than that, up to 315 pounds (the weight of a Lycoming O-320, which delivers up to 160 hp). The original SuperSTOL was typically powered by a Rotax 912 (100 hp, about 165 pounds) or a Rotax 914 (115 hp, 175 pounds).

Looks like a beast. Wonder what the gross weight is?

Looks like a winner. I want to sit in one sometime and see how my long legs fit. UL is smart to approve E15 fuel.

It will probably be the same as the regular Super STOL, 1320 or 1550 lb's.

They're definitely neat aircraft, but useful load is one of the largest factors I take into consideration when looking at planes. YMMV

Yeah, I'm hoping for a gross weight increase...if not, then it seems like a significant tradeoff (increased structural + engine weights). Although the fuel flexibility is definitely a plus.

The other recent Just development for their aircraft is the addition of spoilers...worth it, or just more to add to the total empty weight?

With only 26 gallons of fuel on board, the fun won't last long with 180 hp...

2 1/2 hours in a cruise configuration, <2 hours in climb at full power--assuming it burns fuel at the same rate as my 180hp Lycoming does.

I guess with the folding wings Just Aircraft may have limitations adding larger fuel tanks in the wings. Perhaps an optional Header Tank given the extra fuse length will be an option. Of course, if this all has to be within LSA specs of 1320 lbs, the pilots are going to all have to be mighty thin.

I hope they will spec it for EAB at a much higher weight, so those not worrying abut LSA conformity will be at ease with more fuel options and higher payloads. Troy and the crew down at Just Aircraft in Walhalla, SC are pretty sharp. I will wait and see how it all plays out.

What sort of track record does this UL520 have? Most people I know (including myself) would be much more inclined to install a good old Lycoming 320. Hopefully Just Aircraft will offer engine mounts etc to support that application.
