Re: Just some pictures

The snow is melting fast around Spokane. The Nordman Airstrip near Priest Lake in North Idaho was a sloppy mess today, but I had great fun and I learned a lot too. 600x6 tires with the skis. The gear extension spring systems worked great.

Hey James - great pictures. On Friday, when you were landing at Eloika Lake, did you try a touch and go at Diamond Lake? My mom lives there and called me thinking the red and white plane that touched down there was mine. I live in Seattle and visit Diamond Lake in the summer on floats.

Hey Greg,
That was me landing on Diamond Lake on Friday. I was on my way to Sandpoint and ran into freezing rain just past Priest River so I turned around. I didn't need to get to Sandpoint that bad. Good fun on Eloika Lake.

I didn't stay in the "Rat Turd Hotel", however someone had really cleaned it up. There is new glass, and the roof was repaired too. It is a good place to get out of the cold or rain.

Real nice to see herds of elk on both the Oregon and Idaho sides of the Snake River. Had one shot at a coyote that I called in but I missed. Had a great time just watching the elk, and mule deer while enjoying some cheap red wine.

James, what were the overnight temps at Big Bar? Runway conditions?

Thinking about heading over there soon-ish.

Hello,

The temperatures at Big Bar ranged from mid 50s to 60s in the daytime to the mid 20s with a hard frost at night. Being that Big Bar is located in the deepest canyon in North America it takes a while for the sun to directly hit on the airstrip itself this time of year too. So don't be in a hurry to have the frost melted off your airplane.

As far as the airstrip condition goes, the Idaho Dept. of Aeronautics has done a great job on the runway, windsock, outhouse ect. I encourage you to support the Idaho Department of Aeronautics and their volunteers. They do an excellent job providing access to Idaho's Backcountry Airstrips.

On another note, the thing I dislike most about winter or cold weather camping is getting out of a warm sleeping bag to put on cold clothing to start the day. As I get older it seems even worse. This last trip I took a small lightweight propane heater to warm my tent up to about 80 degrees in the morning that makes getting up "more civilized".

Enjoy

James
