KX170B failure
Have problems with your aircraft? Maybe just questions about how best to tune or adjust something? Regs or maintenance? Need to know the best way to do something?

Hi,
Two KX170B’s in my 185. They’re old but working. Or they were..
I noticed after a multi-hour sit in hot weather on a ramp I can’t hear any transmit or receiving…
Was quiet on the flight home until I realized my comms both weren’t working.
About 10 minutes in cruise in cooler weather I started to hear a faint crackle of radio. 2 minutes later they were both back fully functioning.
Any troubleshooting ideas or maybe just time to toss a Garmin comm in and call it good.
Thanks

Yeah, time to replace along with the old wire, coax, etc. Wasn't there some FCC reg. 20+ years ago about frequency spacing or tolerance or something rendering those technically illegal (the KX175B was still OK)?

Interesting. No mention of that from my avionics shop. Yeah replace it is. I believe there are some slide in replacements but I’ll probably just toss a Garmin in there. Be done with it.

The frequency stability rule was anything that wasn't certified to meet a stability of +- 3 parts per million over its entire temperature and voltage range had to be scrapped. Commercial FM radios at that time were typically running a stability of 1 part per million or better. I believe the deadline was late 90's, but a lot of owners either never heard about it or just ignored it because they operated in low traffic areas. It's an FCC rule, not an FAA rule, so it doesn't come up at annual inspections.

I know several pilots at AWO, might be I already know you?
I'm over there pretty often for lunch at Ellies, if you see my 180 out on the ramp, look me up.
