I have a 1943 Taylorcraft L2-M (M has spoilers!) with a Continental C-85 that I think makes a pretty good STOL aircraft. Check it:

Very nice Dutch rolls.

I loved flying an L-2M (pulled one out of hibernation once). They're great airplanes and much faster than a J-3! Just be careful to not put a big guy in the back seat on a hot day with the stock Cont A-65...climb rate???

The C-85 and now O-200 conversions make a world of difference. I wish they had more than 2 six gallon tanks (makes cross countries interesting), but hey that's what they have. Good airplane!
