I was just there for the King of Hammers competition.
I saw numerous planes fly over and got to wondering. You can drive anywhere there, can you land a plane there (legally)? I was thinking of flying back out next year and meeting some friends.
I really hate to drive in California traffic, Friday it took 4 hrs to go 115 miles to Johnson valley.

My son goes there frequently and about 3-4 weeks ago I was going to land on the dry lake bed but he said it was pretty rough so I didn't. He was on the lake bed and was giving me info like wind and surface condition. I've been on that dry lake bed in the plane 3x. It's legal but it gets wet because of the rain and they drive on it do donuts and really mess it up.

How was the KOH? I was watching it live Friday via web cast. I'd love to go see it in person.

It's a cross between desert racing and rock racing where 4wd buggies compete for the fastest time. It's brutal to say the least. The Hammers is a famous network of trails in the Johnson Valley, the rock section takes place here.

It's pretty cool. I have never been near so many people in my life, I'm guessing 30k at least. Big tent city's with thousands of motor homes. They definitely did it up right with with the expo part from what I saw. A real family event outside the race, kids everywhere driving everything, bonfires every night. It was cold though, 22 in a tent sucks.
My brother has a tricked out rock crawler we tooled around in.

Yeah the lake beds were really torn up, I think the thing to do would be land on a road and taxi to a spot. Even then I think Bushwheels would be in order.
