Landing Off Airport Inside City Limits

Do you guys know what would be legal as far as landing on private property inside the city limits? I am loosing my POS 150 in a Divorce but I hope to buy it back. It will be going out of annual and I won't have it legal for some time if ever. Might just part it out. Right now it's worth more in parts. I have a friend that has some land large enough to land it on and I wanted to keep it there to work on it or part it out. I know I would need to OK it with the city but I have some friends there. What would the FAR's say about it.? I know, I know I should just sell it now. But you don't sell planes now, you give them away! #-o

If you intend to part it out, borrow a trailer and take the wings and tail feathers off. It is actually quite easy and you can do it with a few helpers in a few hours. No legal issues, and you can now put it in any garage or storage locker.

Re: Landing Off Airport Inside City Limits

This is as good an excuse as any to post this: a friend of mine owns the property/home on this bench above Pocatello. He has stated many times that I ought to land there. It must be 7 to 900' long with a nice upslope, piece of cake(ending up by the city water tank). The big powerline wouldn't be a factor though it is close the flight path would be well away from it. Now this isn't just anybody saying this, he is a past Helio Courier pilot, and he flew it out of a very tight strip on the main Salmon River, owned by Stan Potts now. This person also has a story of a total and sudden power failure in a medium sized twin at 12K, right over Moose Creek, in IFR conditions, at night. He landed it safely deadstick on the old Moose Creek strip, or what was left of it. Some hunters picked them up minutes later, so a very serious almost certain near death experience turned into a momentary inconvinence! Great guy, and I was/am honored that he'd allow me to land at his place.

Here's the potential problem, and the reason I havn't done it: all of Pocatello could see this, and sure as hell someone would call 911, and before you knew it the media would be there. That isn't the half of it though, the facility at the top of the picture is a womens "correctional facility", and you can just imagine how exciting it could get if some bored guards wanted to get in on the action. Short final would take me right over the only road to the prison. So, for me anyway, this particular in the city off airport landing will probably remain un landed.

Then again, just now, in looking at the picture before posting it, I see I could make an approach that would keep me hidden from most of the city view. hmmm [-X Image

We used to be able to land on the street in Dell Montana and go to Yesterday's Cafe, only one driveway to watch and one line. I'm not sure if that's still kosher, the city isn't any bigger.

It's right next to the State Highway Department, and they just laughed.
Seems like with permission tho, you would be golden.

Re: Landing Off Airport Inside City Limits

Thanks guys. Might be something to consider. My wife might have a heck of a time selling that beat up old 150 if it was in a field. Letting me buy it in the future might become more attractive. :D

Re: Landing Off Airport Inside City Limits

Is there some form of city ordinance against landing aircraft? Because not long ago I was thumbing thru the 5010 documents and it appears that if it's a temporary landing surface for under 30 days you don't have to report it to the FAA as an airstrip. Agree it would be more sticky within the city, and lots more attention. Any un-foreseen fines or legal representation to protect yourself against city harassment would quickly devalue that 150 in it's current apparent low-value condition..... let alone a true landing incident! Safe bet is to pull the wings and either restore or tear-down at your friends place.

Good luck to you either way you decide.... ~CRAZEDpilot

Re: Landing Off Airport Inside City Limits

To be perfectly clear: if I ever choose to land at Bill's place, I would NOT ask permission, from the city. They have enough on their plate, and don't need to be bothered with something way outside their comfort zone like this. Tex had it right.

Yes, I used to land there also back when it was the Calf-A; what a fantastic breakfast and great folks running the place. It is my understanding that it is no longer allowed because some moron did a run-up in the gravel parking lot and damaged several cars in the process.

Ah, that would do it, wouldn't it? Interesting that someone would be skilled enough to stick a tricky landing and then do a run-up in the gravel. Chico Hot Springs put the kibosh on planes because of one of Darwins' escapees too, I think the guy splattered, rebuilt, and spattered again
