Larger Tires for a 172

Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

Re: Larger Tires for a 172

How big a tire do you need? When I had my 182 I put 8.00x6 on the mains and a 6.00x6 on the nose. No paperwork at all, other than a logbook entry, because that setup is an option from the factory.

Re: Larger Tires for a 172

600x6 in the front and 800x6 in mains would be enough for most places. How do I find out if it was an option on a 79 R172K ?
I guess you can just change the main tire and tube but do you need anything else changed?
In the front going to the 600x6, what do I need to change? Can I use a regular cleveland wheel of the main? hub change? bigger fork?

thanks

Gilbert

Re: Larger Tires for a 172

Gilbert, just check your POH and it should list an optional tire if it is approved. It will probably work on your plane but us guys with older planes are stuck with a 5:00 because we didn't have an optional tire for the front. I have a 69 150J and I can put a 6:00/6 on the front of it because it is an optional size but I can't put one on a 61 172B. I just got a new plane (actually older Plane) a 1960 175B with a 180 Avcon conversion and I think I am stuck with the same problem.

Several people have told me I can put the 8:00's on the mains without anything but a logbook entry but I can't find anything to confirm that. I know they will fit and there is no modifications needed. I have a 206 fork and two brand new 8:00/6's sitting on the hangar floor waiting to figure out how to get this done legally. I have had my license for less than a week and don't feel like risking it right now. :?

Re: Larger Tires for a 172

The POH only mentions the tires in one section, under maintenance. Just for the PSI levels of inflation, and it does not mention other tire sizes.

Since I will be making the mod in Bolivia, STC's not a big deal as I can get a field approval easily. The aircraft will be registered there so I will loose my November registration.

Can I fit a 6.00x6 on the stock front fork, or maybe a 6.00 x 5 since its smaller ??
I guess on the mains I could go with 8.00x6 and not have any brake issues, or have to change axels, etc?
Does a 79 model have aluminum or metal axels?

thanks

You can put the 8:00's on the mains without any modifications. The one I saw still had Goodyear Brakes but it was OK even with the wheelpant bracket. I don't know if a 6:00/6 will fit on the front fork. If you find out let us know. That might be easier to do than a 206 Fork Field Approval.

Re: Larger Tires for a 172

I don't think it will fit since the 6.00x6 does not fit the standard 182 fork.

Re: Larger Tires for a 172

Want to know if it was an option at the factory? Look at the Type Certificate Data Sheet (TCDS), not the POH! That will tell the tale. Everyone should have a copy of theirs. For the 172, it is TCDS # 3A12. For the 182 it is TCDS # 3A13. You can easily put the 206 fork on a 172 ......go to your nearest Cessna Service Center. Ask them for the Mod # regarding the applicable Cessna Service Kit for the large fork. Use that information to install the 206 nose fork.....then a simple log book entry from the IA that states it was installed in accordance with the requirement of Cessna Service Kit No. (*Y*&^%). There ya go. That takes care of the nose and for 7.00's all the way around. For 8.00's on the mains you might need a bit more paperwork like a field approval for the mains. For 8.50's on the mains you will need a field approval, but not hard to get using the FAA's tundra tire chart and procedures ....straight from my IA.

Re: Larger Tires for a 172

Thanks AKGrouch!
I am still debating whetether I want to do this or not. I have a strip at my house and am wanting to extend it a bit so I can keep both planes here instead of having to keep the 172 in town (30 miles). The main reason for my question was because I have a set of 26" GY "blimp" tires and was really wanting to find a use for them. :) I do also have some 8.50's but they aren't in nearly as good of shape as the like new GY's. I'll going to talk to my IA about this later this week when I get the plane annualed.

Re: Larger Tires for a 172

AK Grouch

I will head to the Cessna dealer and try to get that number. The Type Certificate I found for the 172 does not list tires at all. My friend showed me the data sheet on his 170 and it lists about everything approved for his plane but 3A12 only shows what props are approved. I will try looking again but I know I just read #3A17 for the 175 too and nothing about tires was mentioned. The reason I know the 6:00's are approved on the 150J is because the tire pressures for it are listed in my POH and it says (Optional). My mechanic told me that he didn't think the field approval for the 8:00 mains would be a problem but the guy from the FAA already told him he wouldn't approve the front fork on my 172. Hopefully I can do it your way and he won't need to approve it at all on the 175 I traded it for. Thanks a lot for the info.

Re: Larger Tires for a 172

Tires are listed for my Bonanza but in a more general way. At the bottom of each model it lists a set of required equipment like this...202(a) (b) or (c). Then you have to go to the end of the list to find out what that is. With Cessna's have the Cessna dealer or even easier go to the Cessna Pilots Assoc and have them give you the original equipment list for your model. That will very simply show you what you can install with a logbook signoff.

Re: Larger Tires for a 172

As mentioned above, I do have the TC 3A12 for the R172K and it does not mention anything about tires.

Would love to have the HD 206 set up.
